Has anyone gone from blonde to dark and did you like it?

I have been considering this for ages but my hairdresser is not keen.

I have been having highlights since I was a teenager but find the upkeep really hard. My hair is naturally mousy with hardly any grey so the regrowth is really noticeable and I find it hard to get to the hairdressers sometimes.

I have asked at two different salons and both hairdressers say I would hate it and it would take some time to go blonde again.

Celebrities seem to go from blonde to dark and back again and it always seems to suit them both colours.

Has anyone done this and did it suit you?

I know several people who've done this and they all looked significantly older. They were all in their 40s.

I grew out my blonde highlights to my natural mousey colour and love it. It's in lots better condition and I'm finding it easy to grow it long which I struggled with when it was bleached. Hated it when I tried dyeing it dark in the past as although it looked good initially it often seemed to have a reddish tint or fade to a warm brassy blonde as the highlights showed through and I need cool colours. My natural hair colour is boring compared to bright blonde but I think it suits me well and the lovely shine, length and lack of roots make it look overall a lot better than when it was blonde. Need to rethink clothes and make up colours a bit though and it only works if you're not invested in being 'a blonde' as part of your self image. I feel I look more like me now.

I am a natural blonde and I went very dark brown/red when I was about 20. I had to also darken my brows, fake tan etc for it to look remotely natural. I loved it but the upkeep was that whenever my roots grew through, it looked like I had bald patches with blonde!

Then when I had enough of constantly touching the roots up, I then spent lots stripping it out and turning my hair to candy floss...

My advice is to not go very very dark. I never would again.

In fact I would say lowlights over time would be a better idea!

Yes! Best decision I've ever made - I still get an all over colour, a warm brown. Hairs super shiny and in great condition compared to when I got it highlighted!

I did it years ago before the greys took over, I liked it at the time but look much better blonde, my skin tone and eyebrows were all wrong for dark hair.

I did it and hated it and it took months and a lot of expense to get back blond I am naturally very dark. I also thought it aged me.

Why not have low lights put in so it isn't so much of a complete change. You could always have 2 different shades put through.

Defo agree about the grey! I'm now (early 30's) starting to get the odd grey and they are probably more noticeable than if I were blonde.

Not sure how to tackle it though as hate the effect that blonde dye has on the texture of my hair and it totally washes out my face.

To those saying it made them look older (going dark), what's your hair like out of interest? Naturally straight/curly, thin/thick?

My hair is very thick with a natural wave and I actually think being darker makes me look younger as my hair is fuller and more healthy, as opposed to being quite dry and brittle when it was blonde.

It's weird when you're not blonde anymore though as I found it quite a big part of my look.

Soosiesoo My hair is very healthy and about an inch above my bum I either have it straight or beach waves I am olive skin and my natural hair is dark brown . I’m not platinum blonde tho (think that would also age me)I am more of the golden and ash blonde mix with lowlights of my natural colour similar to Jenifer Lopez hair colour Smile

Sounds beautiful Jjbay!
