When a little black dress is not so much a little black dress, more the Big Tent at a 3-ringed circus....

Can you get away with it.

And what do you wear with it in terms of cardi or something?

Feel free to laugh at my piss poor attempts to be stylish.

what shape is the dress?

mytwopenceworth · 17/07/2007 20:54

Shape?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

It is a short, well, to the elbow, sleeved dress, almost to the ankle - It is supposed to be halfway between knee and ankle, but I am very very short! and it is just straight down, iyswim. Sort of v neck, more heartshaped actually. kind of.

Sounds lovely

wrap/pashmina type thing?

JackieNo · 17/07/2007 20:59

What's the event, mytwopenceworth? Killer wedges (why doesn't that work the same as 'killer heels')? Wedges good for balancing the upper half, iyswim, but give you a bit of height too. Not sure on cardigan.

WigWamBam · 17/07/2007 20:59

I think I just about get away with it - I still look like a barrel in mine, but a reasonably stylish one. Anything too fitted, though, and I don't feel comfortable; I am self-conscious enough wearing a posh frock at the best of times because of my size.

I tend to cover up my arms because I don't so much have bingo wings as ruddy great tent flaps - I have a sheer black shrug type thing that I wear with it.

mazzystar · 17/07/2007 21:00

for what occasion?

mytwopenceworth · 17/07/2007 21:13

No occasion, I just bought some new clothes. But I haven't worn a dress in 8 years and I'm a bit unsure if a short fat person really suits a long dress.

Here it is anyway.

Here are the other things I bought (minus the underwear!). What do you think of them?

filchthemildmanneredjanitor · 17/07/2007 21:22

big beautiful woman

filchthemildmanneredjanitor · 17/07/2007 21:23

can i ask what size you are?

Roseylea · 17/07/2007 21:23

ok, thanks!

filchthemildmanneredjanitor · 17/07/2007 21:23

would you not be better with a little colour?

mytwopenceworth · 17/07/2007 21:30

x7/8 but I buy bigger because I feel better if it is baggy.

I bought more colour than usual. I bought a plum, and a green, and a blue. Normally, everything is black.

OP posts:
filchthemildmanneredjanitor · 17/07/2007 21:33

well general rule is that if you buy bigger it just makes you look bigger. you would be better getting something that fits properly iyswim.

if you are short then i woul;dn't wear the dress ankle length. again it will just swamp you.

can you have it taken up?

filchthemildmanneredjanitor · 17/07/2007 21:34

the plummy/purple top is a lovely colour!

mytwopenceworth · 17/07/2007 21:35

Well, I did think I could get my sister to take it up and turn it into a long tunic that I could wear with trousers.

OP posts:
mazzystar · 17/07/2007 21:35

does the dress need a cardi?

i think all it needs is some bold coloured jewellery and maybe heels of some sort

like the purple top, look dramatic with simple pants and bold jewellery too

JackieNo · 17/07/2007 21:35

Nice stuff. I have a feeling that slightly shorter might work better for the dress - could you get it shortened a bit, just so that you can see the bottom half of your calves, at least (if it's longer than that). Should make you look taller. Then some striking jewellery to draw the eye to your top half, some chunky heels/wedges, and you're away. Still not sure what sort of cardigan would work.

JackieNo · 17/07/2007 21:36

Snap, mazzystar.

WigWamBam · 17/07/2007 21:36

I like it. I like the tops as well - they are the kind of things that I wear (because I like baggy tops too - they hide a multitude of sins).

Do they ship OK to the UK? They're a good price, and it's so hard to find clothes in big sizes over here.

filchthemildmanneredjanitor · 17/07/2007 21:36

if it was me( and i have the opposite problem , nrearly 6 ft so everything too short) i wouldn't waer it so long.

maybe just have it taken up to a 'proper' length so you can wear it a s a dress-you have got some tops-it's something differnt to wear then isn't it?

mytwopenceworth · 17/07/2007 21:41

Yes WWB, it was fine. Took a couple of weeks.

They've got loads of lovely stuff.
And the tops are so nice and looooooong. You know the prob over here where all the tops end at the waist. These come right down.

Trousers are very long though. I've got to ask my sister to take them up.

But things are very well cut.

OP posts:
WigWamBam · 17/07/2007 21:44

Oooh ... I might have me a little spending spree

It's the length of tops I have a problem with too ... they are usually that awful length which makes you look a bit like TweedleDee where the bottom of your tummy comes below the bottom of the shirt.

I think the others are probably right about having the dress shortened a little - a bit of calf showing will help to add the illusion of height.

filchthemildmanneredjanitor · 17/07/2007 21:47

if you were wearing it for an occasion and wanted a cardi then maybe something like this?
