I have a fabulous night out planned with DD1 in a couple of weeks and have Nothing To Wear as usual. Doing dinner and theatre. She’s young and thin and glamorous. I’m a chunky windswept hippy and struggle with fancy. I’m most comfy in doc martens and jeans.

My requirements.....

Size 16
I need a sleeve to cover the wings.
Below knee best.
I have a waist but blobby above and below.
Comfortable but nice.

Any suggestions?

Hmmmm.
Any colour except pastels. Any neckline but not too high (short neck).
Redeeming features? Not sure. Maybe Curves but large ones.
Budget - under £100.

What sort of thing do you usually wear? More dresses or trousers? Do you prefer block colour or pattern? Do you actually want to wear heels, or rather not? If you don't enjoy wearing them it's best not to bother TBH, it's not worth it

sleepismysuperpower1 · 30/04/2019 21:24

this is just above the knee but might suit? x

palahvah · 30/04/2019 21:28

Not necessarily fashionable, but theatrical and glam: would you wear something kaftany in a fabulous print/colour with statement necklace/earrings? You could still wear flats - even your DMs. Do/get someone to do your nails, hair and make-up? If you don't fancy a print then look at cos - they have block colours in generous shapes, and you could just choose bold contrasting nail/lip colour/jewellery.

Vagchange · 30/04/2019 21:29

Do you want to go a bit vintage if you’re usually quite boho? Square or V necks are good for big boobs but decent shoulders. Shirred waist that sweeps out over tummy. Something like this... www.asos.com/stradivarius/stradivarius-str-v-neck-shirred-waist-dress-in-mint/prd/12150243?clr=green&SearchQuery=shirred&gridcolumn=1&gridrow=21&gridsize=2&pge=1&pgesize=72&totalstyles=443

macaronip1e · 30/04/2019 21:30

Maybe try www.scarlettandjo.com - generally quite flattering!

BastardMozzies · 30/04/2019 21:32

Single colour I think.
I like that ASOS one but it’s a bit short I think.
No heels 😱

Bumpdebump · 30/04/2019 21:33

Do you need to get super glammed up? If you're comfortable in DMs I say stick with them! But with a frock

BastardMozzies · 30/04/2019 21:34

Scarlett&jo look fab

Vagchange · 30/04/2019 21:35

Maybe have a little look at the shirred dresses on Asos. There’s a nice Free People one but it would need to be layered with another skirt or skinny trousers.

Bumpdebump · 30/04/2019 21:39

You could wear this with DMs and some big chunky jewellery uk.monsoon.co.uk/view/product/uk_catalog/mon_20/6429120908

Hippy floral dress with DMs and great lipstick would look fab

InterchangeableEmma · 30/04/2019 21:41

How tall are you? A lot of stuff that's above/on the knee on models is longer on most women.

This is certainly a bit marmite but I think you might like it The model is 179cm.
It'd be great with your doc martens, coloured tights maybe and some chuncky jewlery

Bumpdebump · 30/04/2019 21:41

Over your budget but this with boots and a leather jacket www.net-a-porter.com/product/1125083

BastardMozzies · 30/04/2019 21:47

Nice suggestions and good shapes. Need to try on I think.
I’m 170cm tall.

OP posts:
InterchangeableEmma · 30/04/2019 21:57

170 is great, about 10-12 cm a knees length- shorter than most models so really opens up the options. Plenty of sites list the height of model although you might need to faff a bit to spot it

Kaz2200 · 01/05/2019 16:15

Have a look at Matalan floral peplum mdi dress, I an 5'2 size 14-16 and it is surprisingly flattering

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/05/2019 19:00

That's pretty, Wiggly.

I've seen a couple of people in M&S midi dresses recently, which looked surprisingly nice.

Red one

Silk one No sleeves but you could layer a t-shirt under it and top with a biker

Animal

Blue This doesn't look good online but `I saw someone looking great in it recently.

Thinkle · 01/05/2019 19:28

Have a look at the M&S jumpsuits!!

Kaz2200 · 01/05/2019 20:33

I also bought a wide legged spotted jumpsuit off ebay which arrived to day which I love.

This has a nice weight to it so hangs not clings. Nice with a denim jacket. www.lauraashley.com/en-gb/en/green-floral-fit-and-flare-dress/mda300
