Invited to swanky West End art gallery opening - what to wear!?!

The gallery specialises in pop surrealism - think aristocrats and beautiful languid assistants. For me, an exciting evening out would usually be the cinema!
I am in my 50's, 5'1 and fairly slim but not at all elegant of body.
I'm thinking black - black - black but can't get any further than that.

Earlier in the day i have to attend and speak at a work conference so what on earth could i wear that will work for both events!?!?!

I mostly dont wear any make up except mascara - maybe lipstick would help? And i cant do heels. All flustered!

Lucinda Chambers style - relaxed elegance - is what i aspire to!

Can help but I have just googled up Lucinda - she is fab! Love her style

I'd get a really good haircut the day before, and maybe look for a Vivienne Westwood Anglomania dress, or Cos or something.

Do you think it’s going to be fancy in terms of dress, or cool? I used to go to gallery things quite often in a previous job (PR) and it tended to be quite understated rather than dressy-uppy.

If I was invited to one tomorrow (based on things in my wardrobe right now) I would wear one of these outfits:

Black flannel cropped wide legged trousers (Cos), tucked in fine-knit black merino polo neck (Other Stories), chunky black brogues (Dune)

Dark green and black leopard print midi dress (Whistles), black Chelsea boots with a low block heel (ancient Clarks)

Black leather skirt (Jigsaw), black slightly sparkly fine-knit polo neck (Whistles), the brogues again, opaque tights

Red lipstick. Black leather biker with the first two, faux fur with the leather skirt.

Go onto The Bystander section of Tatler and you will find photos taken at many art galleries. Anything goes, TBH.

I agree anything goes...they will be people there dressed to the nines...and someone dressed like they are about to go to the household dump after walking their dog. (Plus everyone in-between) so wear what you feel comfortable in and if you want to dress up a bit then do.

Fantastic advice, thank you.
I think it will be 'cool' rather than 'dress up' but there will definitely be designer clothing around.
Judy love your suggestions, stylish and practical!
I guess it is about attitude and confidence as much as the clothes... but i still want to fit in a bit.
