How long can you keep lipstick and other make-up?

Had some lipsticks for ages (5 years?) Are they still ok? And what about eyeliner? Could it be unhealthy to still use when too old?

Bit of a guide here - does that help?

The lippies are okay. Sharpen the pencils and sniff them.

Hmm according to JackieNo's list being 'made up' at the make-up counter is a big NONO. Could get all the bacteria around...

No, five years is not OK.

Legislation was passed quite recently to put sell by dates on cosmetics - you'll see a number on the packaging which means the number of months you can keep it after opening - eg 12, 36...

Make-up and creams get full of bacteria...

My Lip Stain from the Body Shop has lasted me 10 years. I'm spending a fortune trying to find a replacement that I like.
