Backpacks! Herschel Little America or...?

I’ve been keen to get a smart but practical backpack for a while now, and have been particularly lusting after this Herschel one (pic). However DM (who has kindly agreed to give me some money towards it for my birthday) has queried why I want something ‘for crossing the alps’ and says it’s huge and ridiculous. So now I’m second-guessing myself.

Basically I want something that will be good for work/ carrying everyday bits, but would also hold enough for a day out with two small children, or a night (or even two) away. Nice colours preferable but ideally not patterned. Definitely want comfy straps.

Have looked at Fjällräven as well, but they don’t seem to do the big Kankens any more and the normal ones look too little. And they don’t look very comfy, but maybe they are...

Any thoughts? Recommendations? Or convince me to stick to my guns and get the Herschel one.

Those Herschel bags are everywhere at the moment.

Blush I’m not usually a fashion sheep. But I do like the red stripey lining...

I like this one too. And it’s much cheaper...

I have a Herschel backpack, it's smaller than the ones you've picked out, I'd find those a bit big for work. I love it though, I've had it 3+ years now, I've never been a handbag person. I like that it's smart but practical, and suits how I dress. Big enough for everything I need but comfortable to carry. They were everywhere when I worked in London a few years ago but I haven't seen anyone else with one for ages! Might just be where I live now.

I've got a NorthFace Isabella which does all the jobs you need your backpack to do.
Picked it as didn't want to buy Hershey's.

If I could justify buying another rucksack. I’d get this! I think it’s nicer it’s like a grown up kanken... and comfier!
