Has anyone used a home hair dye successfully over previously highlighted hair?

I can’t afford to keep going to the hairdressers as frequently as I need to do cover my greys. I’m thinking of just doing it. myself at home so I can do the roots as often as I need to.
I’ve had highlights so is it ok to do this? There seem to be so many brands available, can anyone recommend a product?

I experimented a lot with home hair dye kits in my teens- never had any problems covering over highlights. I’ve dyed my greys at home for years. I couldn’t afford the time or money to go to the hairdressers every 4-5 weeks.

Maybe try a strand test over a small patch of highlighted hair to see how the colour takes? What’s your natural & highlighted colour?

I use Excellence- the shades seem to be pretty natural. Be careful not to go too dark. It’s much easier to start a bit lighter and go a shade darker than vice versa.

I had highlighted and bleached hair. I went to the hairdressers to do the first dye back to my natural colour. I wanted an ash medium/dark brown. They refused to put ash over highlights in case it turned green. So they used 7.0 (majirel) and it came out a light broan with brassiness. They aaid dont go too dark.
After the initial dye, I have been using Excellence 6.1 and it’s perfect. I do my roots only every 6 weeks and once every 4-5 months I take the colour out with a brush to the ends. I buy excellence 6.1 over the Internet and it works out £7 each time I do my roots!

Thank you, where would I buy Excellence, is it in the shops?

I buy mine from the supermarket on the hair dye aisle- Morrisons/Tesco will sometimes do 2 for £10 deals. Otherwise they do it at Boots/Superdrug etc. It's widely available.

Cottipus thank you. Can I just ask when you do it yourself do you just colour the roots (which in my case are getting greyer by the week) or do you put dye over the whole head of hair?

I think for the first colour they recommend to do a full head. Then when I do root retouches I use a tint brush to apply to the roots, leave on 20 mins then apply to the ends for the last 10 mins.

You could always try just doing the roots first and see if you want to do the whole lengths of your hair.
