Mother of the groom outfit help please!

My ds is getting married this summer. They're having a register office ceremony followed by a garden party/blessing in our garden a few days later. I am a casual dresser and haven't really 'dressed up' before, apart from my own wedding. I've never worn a hat. Grin

I'm 47 and by the wedding I should be about a size 14, maybe a large one. I'm disabled and can't walk in high heels and don't want to show off my toes. I'm 5'7".

I like vintage style but I don't want to look ridiculous or like I'm in fancy dress. I've attached some pictures of things I like, what do you think? I really like the style of the crochet half hat but I'm not sure about the material Confused

Here are a couple more things I like - the heels might be a bit high though.

I think that outfit goes well together and those types of dresses are fashionable at the moment

ChristineBaskets · 14/02/2019 11:11

Thank you green, that's a relief because I thought they might look ridiculous! Smile

I think the top outfit will look great all together! You've chosen well.

LizzieSiddal · 14/02/2019 11:21

I absolutely love the style but not sure if the top dress is too “busy” for Mother of the groom. That’s just my opinion so feel free to ignore me, but I’d choose that style but a plainer fabric.

Here’s an example of similar style but one colour.

LizzieSiddal · 14/02/2019 11:28

Here’s another and a really good price.

That's actually lovely Lizzie. Smile I hoped the pattern might distract from my lumps and bumps a bit? I dunno, I'm going to wear shaping underwear anyway.

Cross posted- I meant the first one but the second is beautiful too! You've identified my taste alright Smile I don't like anything booby or figure hugging really and I like a higher neckline, so I think I will discount the cinched waist dress in my op.

You’re quite right, choose something you’re comfortable in. You have to wear it all day.

You’ve got a lovely style, you’ll look great.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 14/02/2019 18:21

Both outfits are beautiful but I agree about the crocheted hat - it's a bit odd. The other one looks better I think.

CocoLoco87 · 14/02/2019 18:29

I like the pattern of the first one but the style of the second one. It's the top half i like. I think the neckline might be more flattering for a size 14? Depends on your norks of course!

Mmmhmmokdear · 14/02/2019 20:07

Love both outfits, although i think the second one is more summery. Your shoe picks are both top notch, I love them!

MoltonSilver · 14/02/2019 22:37

Everything you've chosen is lovely. You know what you're doing, you won't go wrong.

FogCutter · 14/02/2019 22:41

I like your style op , both outfits look great!

ChristineBaskets · 15/02/2019 09:57

Thank you for your kind comments Smile

But the hats though. I really like the style of the crochet one if only it wasn't crochet, and I love the other one but it's expensive and in America. Where can I buy half hats like them in the UK please, apart from Etsy? I'd love to be able to try them on first.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 15/02/2019 15:50

I don't think the second hat is that expensive for what it is - given that it's ideal? (Although I don't know how much they'd charge for shipping but, as it's second hand, you shouldn't have to pay customs duty on it).

The crochet one is just too unrefined I think for a wedding, or at least for the Mother of the Groom.

I think I'd be taking myself to a decent haberdashers and having a go myself (and I don't claim to be creative). Or perhaps contact the Etsy seller and ask if she could make it in something else or at least supply you with the base so you can do something yourself?

ChristineBaskets · 15/02/2019 19:31

Thank you don't that's a good idea about contacting the seller, I agree it seems a bit informal in wool Smile

I think that both outfits are lovely and will suit thd venues but I particularly like the first. The collar on the dress and the style of the shoes appeal to me most.
