Hello,

I've been shortlisted for an industry award which is obviously very lovely. However there's the award night in April and I'm getting ahead of the game by worrying about what to wear... been hunting online and struggling. I'm turning 40 this year and feeling a bit like I've suddenly lost all sense of what's fabulous!

Please can anyone help?

  • dress code is black tie, would prefer not too ott, most people will be knee length dresses or midi judging by the photos of past events. I'm happy with long as long as it's not too "much"
  • size 12
  • big boobs with a lot of gravity going on. I answered must be able to wear a bra
  • hour glass shape
  • I have good legs and my arms are pretty decent too so I'm perfectly happy showing either
  • I think I'm a "summer"
  • budget is around £100

Thank you SO MUCH!

Quiz have some lovely dresses. Good prices too. I always dress in 'classic' dresses but recently invested in some dresses I love but wouldn't normally wear. Do you want a plain dress and accessorize with detailed things. Or a pattern. I would go to a department store or monsoon and try a few different styles on. Take a photo of each style and then look at the photos with a cuppa and a someone you trust to be honest with you.

I would go for one colour rather than a pattern in case you win and there are photos

If you want to search online I'd put "cocktail dress" as the search term

Good idea @fluffyjumper to try lots on and take photos. I like the dresses in Quiz too. I had a lovely one from house of Fraser last year. Also I was looking at dresses today,as we have a wedding to go to. Dorothy Perkins had loads online. All different shapes and sizes, some in the sale. You could order a few, have them delivered to your nearest store. Try them on in store and return what you don't want all in the same shopping trip🙂.

I recently discovered everything5pounds. It's amazing. Got some £70 jeans for 5 quid. Some nice dresses and shoes too.

Go to John Lewis womenswear website (or department store of your choice)
Filter Black tie, size 12, price
Untick brands like Adrianna Papell and Gina Bacconi because they are for old ladies (I'm 42)
Browse, select

Something like this? www.johnlewis.com/jolie-moi-plunge-wrap-dress/grey/p3805523?size=12

Since you’re being incredibly organised why don’t you book at personal shopping session at John Lewis? ( or similar)

I always recommend

Diva Catwalk

And The Pretty Dress Company.

Have just read an article in The Times from January 16th. The beauty editor is highly recommending the Studio by Preen collection at Debenhams. She said that whenever she wears any of their dresses, she gets loads of compliments. Even when standing next to people whose clothes costs thousands. The dresses she mentions are all about £79. Must be worth a look.
