Anyone gone over to the dark side? [grin]

I am blonde, actually that is a lie, I was blonde but from about the age 18 have been having it highlighted. Haven't had a chance to get to the hairdressers since we moved. I have an appointment for a cut/colour next weekend. As my hair has grown a lot since last time it is obvious my natural colour is a dark mousey (can't even really say "blond").. I am fairly pale (although do tan) and have blue eyes. Has anyone opted to darken their hair in this situation rather than lighten again, and was it a sucess? Need some positive stories before I bite the bullet and go for such a radical change.

i recently went dark again after years of blonde. my natural colour is dark brown with blue eyes. i hated it and have had it changed back to blonde again. i just felt really plain and pale and dull

my mum is naturally dk brown but has highlighted her hair for years and years. I remember about 10-15 years ago she decided to dye it brown and she said it depressed her. she went back to highlights v quickly after that. I think it does make your hair look alot healthier, though.

Gingerbear · 28/06/2007 14:52

why not go part-way - with pale skin and blue eyes, chestnut with blonde highlights might be good.

Gingerbear · 28/06/2007 14:53

think of Cameron Diaz as a blonde and a brunette....

southeastastra · 28/06/2007 14:53

ha i went dark after years of highlights, then went back to them. but now want to go back to brown. argh it's hard isn't it!

WaynettaSpice · 28/06/2007 14:53

I have brown hair which was being highlighted for years. About 2 years ago I took the plunge and got it dyed slightly darker than my natural colour. It freaked me out at first, but when my natural colour came out it was much lighter, which was good.
I don't regret having shiny, healthy looking hair!

Gingerbear · 28/06/2007 14:55

but then again, Cameron Diaz has tanned skin.

COV I have the same colouring as you and spent about 3 years with my natural hair colour, dark blonde, after years of highlights. I recently went back to highlights and OMG it makes me look and feel SOOO much better about myself, I can't tell you. I'm glad I did it but I'm glad I went back to being properly blonde again

Gingerbear · 28/06/2007 16:33

Carmenere, I always thought you were a redhead!

ComeOVeneer · 28/06/2007 16:36

Sorry I didn't describe things very well. I am currentlyvery blonde (due to a lot of different tones on blonde highlighs), so when it starts to grow out my natural darker mousey colour is very noticable. I was thinking on going darker than my actual colour (so it has a richer tine to it) with some blondish highlights to lift it a bit.

I used to be blonde and had mousey brown hair as a child. I've also had brown-red hair for a while but now my hair is dyed blue-black and i love it.

I hated having brown hair and didn't want to be blonde as it didn't suit me. I'm not saying to go black like me but maybe dark brown with some sutble highlights.

ComeOVeneer · 28/06/2007 17:45

Black would def be too draining for my colouring. But I o like the idea of brown with some lighter bits to lift it.

no harm in trying it, can easily be changed if you dont like it

indiasmum · 28/06/2007 19:38

i have always had my hair highlighted since i was about 12 and experimenting with sun-in! have been red too on and off during a grungey period in the early 90s. i went back to dark brown (am natuarally dark mousey) 2 yrs ago. i hated it beyond belief. i felt invisible, plain, dull and just not me. after 2 months went back to my highlights (which is basically differnet blondes). nooone said they didnt like the brown on me at the time but when i changed back they all said how pleased they were i'd changed back to blonde!
i keep yearning after dark brown glossy locks as it always seems to look gorgeous on everyone else but it just doesnt work for me.
you could try on some brown wigs first and see if you like it!
and you can always change back again if you do have it done and dont like it.

I was a highlighted blonde (also have pale skin that tans and blue eyes, and am naturally a mid-brown colour). I went fully burnette about 10 years ago and it was the best decision I ever made. I cringe when I see my blonde self in pictures now. Anoher plus is that whereas the blonde dye was gradually drying my hair out, the dark dye I have done is actually good for my hair - its a vegeatble based colour and is lovely and glossy.

I say go for it...if you don't like it its pretty easy to put in highlights again.

nik66 · 29/06/2007 11:54

hi... I was a very short crop white bleached blonde for ages .... and went the hole hog to a rich chocolatey brown.
I'm blue eyed as well but tan easily
I love the dark side..... your hair will be rich and really really shiney.... have never had my hair in such good condition
I know its a radical change , but go for it
