Pear cut engagement ring - old fashioned?

I am choosing and engagement ring and want to avoid the princess and cushion cut as I’d just like something a bit different. I’m finding myself drawn to the pear cut/tear drop engagement rings but note that these seem very unpopular.

Whilst I am looking for something different I am worried I may have bad taste - do I? Are these cuts undesirable for a reason?

Any engagement ring inspiration gratefully received!

I have a pear solitaire, in rose gold. I love it. However, the point does sometimes catch on clothes which is annoying, but I imagine this can happen with any shape, but more likely with a point.

Here’s mine. I wear it with the point facing down. Chose a bezel setting, because I didn’t want claws getting in the way.

All absolutely beautiful. I see there are different ways of wearing them, point up or point down... I had assumed point down (don’t know why). I like that I can change the look easily it if I feel like it, added bonus!

Pears are very elegant but being non symmetrical (well they do have one line of symmetry but you know what I mean), many people don't consider them. Think carefully how to have it set. Having the stone set so the point end is further from the band can make it easier to fit a wedding band next to the round end. IFKWIM

I’d love a pear. Or a marquise. Catherine Zeta Jones has a fabulous marquise that’s set sideways. I’d almost be willing to marry Michael Douglas to get my hands on it.

Pear cut is beautiful! Much more interesting than your standard cuts.

My engagement ring is an emerald cut sapphire with diamonds down the shoulders.

Buy something that you love. After all, in 25, 30 + years time something else will be fashionable but you'll still love your ring.

I’ve got a pear cut engagement ring, sadly it doesn’t fit any more as I got too fat but I love it.

These are my rings (in days of yore)

My pear cut is 34 years old. I still love it.

I’ve got a pear. 20 years old now. I’ve had so many compliments over the years and I don’t find it catches; I wear it point up with a slightly curved wedding ring.

Cherries101 · 05/12/2018 12:12

I have a round cut. It’s really unpopular but means you get more diamond for your pennies.

mistermagpie · 05/12/2018 13:07

I've got a round one but I would have loved a triangular cut diamond (trillion?). You pretty much never see them though so I'm probably really unfashionable! A pear is lovely, I like the bezel set one above.

Tartyflette · 05/12/2018 13:43

I have triangle cut ear studs, they're pretty and thr shape makes them look a little more substantial than they actually are Grin
I love the more unusual cuts, pear, marquise and classic emerald -- the ladt one looks really elegant to me. You can keep the princess cut stones, they're everywhere !

Mines a pear and it is stunning and not in the slightest bit old fashioned Smile
