URGENT: Talk to me about hats and, more particularly, how to make them smaller!

Will be wearing FABULOUS new hat tomorrow, but at the moment, when I put it on, it comes right down to my collar bone! So, I've put some cotton wool inside the ribbony-bit inside it, which is great, but how do I get the cotton wool to stay there?! Don't really want to take my hat off in public and find all this white stuff falling about my ears!

use the self-adhesive foamy heel stuff meant for inside shoes, or self-adhesive padded dressing or something - this kind of thing - poke round Boots till you find something suitable

I meant use the sticky pads instead of the cotton wool, not use them to keep it in...

What about that insulation tape stuff that is padded and people put around draughty doors?

Oh, I'm liking the ideas, ladies! In fact, I'm off to both Boots and the hardware store RIGHT NOW to see what I can find. (And your suggestions beat that of DH, who suggested sanitary towels ... Now they'd look nice falling out of my hat at Ascot. Very classy!)
