Dress - vintage - from M&S I bought on eBay. Would be from late 80s. I’m a size 8-10 (smaller on top) my bustis 33 inches hips 36 and waist is 27 inches. This label is for a size 12/14 at that time...
I’m getting annoyed because I’m finding that I’m having to go to size 6 to get a fitted dress. Or an 8 in jeans - there is no way I’m an 8 in trousers!!

Yep, I was a size 14 in 1987. Probably a little heavier now and 8/10 in most shops.

I've no idea where people who are actually small shop

haverhill · 03/11/2018 15:03

I know. I started wearing adult clothes in 1986 and I was a size 12. I am at least 3 stone heavier now, my waist is 6 inches bigger, but I’m a size 14 Hmm.
My mum has some dress patterns from the 70s and 80s and the measurements for the sizes are terrifying!

Cherries101 · 03/11/2018 15:05

It really depends on your shape and if it was fashionable in the era. I am pear shaped and currently a size 12/14. In terms of 40s vintage clothes I’m a 10/12. 50s I’m a 10. 60s / 70s I’ll struggle to fit into a 14. 80s - now I’m a 12/14.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 03/11/2018 15:39

Now I want to see the dress...

LadyLapsang · 03/11/2018 16:04

Yes, I was a (small) 12 in 1980 and I'm a 12 now even though I am at least two stone heavier and 38 years older. In the meantime I have been an 8 , 10 and 14. I do think vanity sizing contributes to obesity.

haverhill · 03/11/2018 16:33

I agree. I am several stone overweight but kid myself that at 5’8’’ and size 14 I am ‘average’.

daftyburd · 03/11/2018 17:10

I bought a pair of medium pants to match a lovely bra. Guessed medium was about 10/12. Thought they were a bit roomy when I put them on. Later running for train they fell down. Luckily my trousers stopped them going further than the tops of my thighs. A dress they would have been round my ankles!!

maggiso · 03/11/2018 18:32

Yep I used to be a small 10 40 years ago ( as I young teen) with a 32 inch non bust, and under a 24 inch waist. Now I am still a 10 but a stone heavier and 3 inches curvier! However I can now buy petite cloths ( I’m short) whereas 40 years ago i had to modify anything where length mattered. I have everything from a size 4 to a 12 in my wardrobe! Ok the size 4 skirt is a bit tight just now!

Floisme · 03/11/2018 18:58

I know. I still have a size 10 Laura Ashley dress I bought in 1974. I can barely fasten it yet I’m still size 8-10 on the high street. I’d probably be a 12-14 now in old money.

cheminotte · 03/11/2018 19:03

It varies with the shop as well of course. I’ve been a size 8 for years but M&S size 8 is now too big for me and a recent Jigsaw size 8 is a bit tight!

elephantoverthehill · 03/11/2018 19:05

M&S did a whole resizing thing about 20 odd years ago if Irc. The anthropometric charts they were using for women's sizing were no longer accurate as women's body shapes had changed due the change in our lifestyles e.g. getting thicker waists due to not sweeping and less walking. They were very upfront about it at the time. It may be one of the reasons for the disparity. Now show us your dress, please.

Orlande · 03/11/2018 19:06

I am short and a healthy bmi and quite often but age 12-13.

nbee84 · 03/11/2018 19:07

I was 9st 2 as a late teen (5ft 4) and a size 12. I now weigh 10st 2 and am still a size 12 and even have some size 10 clothes in my wardrobe Hmm

3out · 03/11/2018 19:12

My granny was a size 16 for years. When she became a little more frail and we bought her clothes in a 10/12 she would politely but firmly refuse to wear them and ask us to return them because that wasn’t her size. She had some good quality skirts etc which she’d had for thirty-plus years. They looked really small but were labelled a 16.
It makes me a bit :/ when people refer to Marilyn Monroe being a goddess but ‘she was a size 16’. Was she a 16 in the 50s, or in today’s terms? And was it an American 16 or UK 16?

EmmaGeddon · 03/11/2018 19:33

I used to be a size 12 in the 70's in my teens. I thought I was a chubber. Looking at photos now, I was really slender.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 03/11/2018 19:33

Er, doesn't absolutely everyone know this?

springmachine · 03/11/2018 19:46

I'm not much different in size between a few years ago before I had children and the clothes I have back then that still fit are size 14'd and I'm now buying size 12's.

OhFlipMama · 03/11/2018 19:48

I wear size 10. I recently found a very old skirt from M&S when I was 17, it's from 1998 and I was also about a 10/12 then. There is no WAY I could get it on now. It's absolutely tiny. Vanity sizing.

ChishandFips33 · 03/11/2018 19:58

I have vintage stuff from charity shops - sizes 16/18. I'm between a 10/12

M&S current stuff...skirts in sizes 8/10/12/14 all fit!

This is why I try anything and everything on!

sizzledrizz · 03/11/2018 20:01

Yes. In the 90s I was a size 8, which was hard to find. I now buy a size 4 or 6. It's getting impossible to shop.

itsbetterthanabox · 03/11/2018 20:13

The sizes don't correspond to any particular inch size so they can change.
I don't really get why you'd care

LaPufalina · 03/11/2018 20:29

In the 90s I was 7-8st (5'3") and a size 10 or 8 if it was sold. Now 10st and usually in a 12!

JaceLancs · 03/11/2018 20:38

In 1988 I bought a size 12 dress for a Xmas do I remember being really upset because I put on weight and the dress I wanted to wear (size 10) didn’t fit so had to rush out and buy something else
I met my current DP that night
I’ve still got the dress and wanted to wear it this December for 30 year anniversary of when we first met
It doesn’t fit - I’m hoping if I lose half a stone I can squeeze into it briefly just for a giggle
I’m currently anywhere between a size 6 and a 10 depending on shop

JaceLancs · 03/11/2018 20:40

I’ve also got a size 14 dress that I bought in 1995 after finally getting back ish to pre DC body
DD who is a tiny size 8 can’t fasten it - I cant even get it past my boobs

Stellenbosch · 03/11/2018 20:42
