Going to Shoreditch and Hoxton with some very hipster friends - what do I wear?!

Have a lot of basics, good skinnies, heels etc, was thinking skinny jeans or leather jeans, shirt and bomber or biker but will I be overdressed (or sooooo last year?!) and what shoes?

Any decent bar recommendations would be helpful. I'd like to offer some suggestions and not seem like a bumpkin - I live in middle England.....I liked Hoxton house hotel but maybe somewhere more intimate and smaller that plays good music?

Thanks!

You sound like you're trying way too hard. Relax. Less is more in east London. And heels? Absolutely not.

Why do you want to make suggestions? Just trust your (hipster) friends if they're local.

(I live in Shoreditch).

I don’t live in Shoreditch, but the skinny jeans/heels look isn’t really “in” here.

If it was me I would wear something along the lines of (thinking of what’s in my wardrobe) leather skirt - shortish a-line from Jigsaw - with opaque tights and chunky brogues or black Stan Smiths, with a fine-knit fitted jumper. Maybe a thin black polo neck from &otherstories I got recently. Or some Cos cord culottes with a similar top, or a tucked in t-shirt. I think it’s probably still too warm for this in London - I’m in Scotland and it is freezing! - but I would probably wear a faux fur coat with the skirt, leather biker jacket with the culottes.

The hipster friends are from Manchester so they wouldn't necessarily know where to go but the women in the group are my age (40's) and look like ultra stylish Instagram bloggers - I just want to make an effort and not feel drab, boring or out of place.

It's my problem, not theirs - they are lovely (and gorgeous - I need different friends Grin)

I lived in hackney for years- left a couple of years back for the north... . I was clubbing in shoreditch when I was 6 months pregnant... wearing a black vest dress and converse. It can be that casual.

Shoreditch is now full of Essex kids on a weekend anyway. Even Dalston is a bit passé now. The hipsters have moved out to Hackney wick - and, whisper it- some have gone west where it’s more affordable.

So I wouldn’t worry about looking east London cool. Just standard, slightly relaxed, slightly edgy, night out ensemble will do.
Skinny jeans, red lipstick and a leather jacket will take you anywhere.
If you wear heels, wear boots. Don’t overdo makeup or jewellery.

Have fun!

Sheep - that was exactly what I wanted to hear - I can do all that and I can actually 'rock and red lip'

Heeled ankle boots but not sky high - skinny jeans and a soft but dressy blouse and one of my bikers - have an array of colours.

Thank you!

Try get into happiness forgets for a cocktail. I used to love going there, back in the years BC

ShoppingOnesSelfFit · 16/10/2018 14:36

What I meant to say was 'rock A red lip' and I was trying to be ironic but forgot the emoji

Bar 98 on Cardigan road can be good for cocktails, its a little hit and miss on whether there are enough people there to get the atmosphere. I love it regardless.

Callooh callay is another nice little bar, fab cocktails.

If you want the full on wankiness that is Shoreditch, there is Lounge Bohemia on the corner of great Eastern. It's very easy to miss walking past, and you will need to book beforehand.

Same with Nightjar, you will probably need to book.

Jaguar shoes mentioned up thread is ace, much more relaxed, and good for a dance later in the evening.

I was in Hoxton recently and lots of women were in converse type trainers with very flash bejewelled dresses. I also saw a group in tracksuits with heels. They all looked so trendy just different to me and my very preppy looking friend!

dontgobaconmyheart · 16/10/2018 16:41

My OH works in Shoreditch and i'm late to the party but very very much agree that too much effort isn't the vibe, it's very very casual with a bit of a 90' twist ( think mom jeans, baggy jumpers with rolled up sleeves, leather jacket or boyfriend fit coat). Brilliant really because no need to struggle in heels, no need to brush your hair ( although perfecting undone hair is a struggle in itself isn't it!)

To be honest whilst some of the bars and stuff are a bit hipster/wanky, and overpriced- it is like going anywhere really, not everyone is walking around looking east london cool, just normal people/a mix, and I guess a younger out of town crowd on the weekend, if it's the evening.

Hope you have a nice evening out OP- what you're going to wear sounds fine!

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 16/10/2018 21:27

Lucy and Yak boiler suit, funky jewellery and trainers...

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 16/10/2018 21:32

This sort..

Going to Shoreditch and Hoxton with some very hipster friends - what do I wear?!
ShoppingOnesSelfFit · 17/10/2018 16:48

I could possibly pull that off but I'd never wear again, so probably won't. I like it tho - thanks
