Not buying an advent calendar this year: mutual support thread

Right. You know it, I know it, we all know it. Beauty advent calendars offer shit value for money when you actually break it down.

I guarantee that if you spent the same sum on any other format of beauty products, you'd do better. Especially when gifts, bonuses and freebies are factored in.

Off top of head, take Clarins. Spend a chunk there at bonus time and you'll have enough good stuff to last the year THAT YOU SPECIFICALLY CHOSE.

Join me. Say no to that tenth mini bottle of Nuxe oil. Decline to fill your pants drawer with Percy and Reed 'wonder spray' (I wonder what it's meant to do?). Stop hassling your friends to relieve you of Leighton Denny nail polish in revolting shades. Guess what? Silver doesn't flatter their hands either.

Rise up! Buy all the gorgeous, beautiful stuff and CHOOSE IT YOURSELF!

Aaaaagh you are the luckiest woman alive !!

Madly jealous, enjoy!

But where's the Percy and Reed...?

Holidaysareover · 10/10/2018 11:26

Just caught up with this thread & I feel the same! I’m going to refill the Clarins box this year, for DD. They have 9 free samples at the mo. Bonus!!

Just another 16 to go Grin but I can use a loyalty code, too...

CherryBlossom23 · 11/10/2018 14:09

Soo.. I've been banging on about the Kiehl's advent calendar for ages, but finally decided it wasn't worth the money. Came home yesterday to find my OH has surprised me with it! I'm delighted but also a little saddened about all the inevitable plastic packaging. Though, it will make December a little sweeter, after what has been a bit of a crappy year.

SymphonyofShadows · 13/10/2018 10:21

Could someone please explain the Clarins Bonus Time to me please? I feel I need this in my life.

Naicethings · 13/10/2018 10:32

I was going to spend £35 on M & S undies, so that I can get the M & S advent calendar for £35. Thanks to this thread, I am actually going to spend the £70 on the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder Edit 4 instead (which is what I really want, rather than multiple things with shea butter in, which I can't use!)

MorrisZapp · 31/08/2019 13:29

Found it! BUMP

I must have read this thread last year but I still bought 2 advents😳

I'm done with beauty advents this year, my drawers are still stuffed with last years leftovers but I have ordered the Costco Gin calendar! I know I'm late to the party but I discovered gin this year and couldn't resist...

popcorndiva · 31/08/2019 17:31

Totally agree. This will be the first year in a while that i will save my money and spend it on a nice Christmas jumper instead

ExpletiveDelighted · 31/08/2019 17:48

I didn't see this thread last year but had the M&S one and liked and used most of the products. However they are only half used as they ended up as part of a huge collection of part used products and I have told myself no more till it's all used up. Then found myself leafing through the preview linked on another thread this morning.

I have about £30 of Boots points, think I might use those towards a one-off nice purchase instead.

spiralflower · 31/08/2019 19:21

I missed this thread last year; the year before I’d bought two (M&S and Lookfantastic) which were great and I loved the thrill of opening the boxes each day, however in reality they weren’t worth it for me as there are certain products I don’t use (eyeliner, brow makeup, hairspray, glittery nail varnish etc) and lots of these appeared each day.

Last year I decided to give them a miss and the cost of the LF one alone bought me full sizes of my favourite moisturisers. People say the M&S one is cheap but you have to spend a certain amount there to be eligible to buy it and while I buy school uniform there and spend lots at other times of the year I don’t tend to buy from there at that time of year, making it an expensive purchase for me.

I will check the contents of the calendars this year but will only buy if there are only one or two products that I wouldn’t use (which seems unlikely!). I’d rather have one or two full sized items that I know I love.

Greyhound22 · 31/08/2019 19:28

I've had the link through for the Lush one. Do you know how much it is?! £200!!!

I keep being tempted to go back to Birchbox but then I think with two of them I could buy something I really want like a Dior lipstick.

CanISpeakToYourManager · 31/08/2019 19:29

I'm out as well. So many little plastic tat bottles. I know what I like, lots of ingredients disagree with my skin.. why bother?

MoonahStone · 31/08/2019 19:35

Did someone say Rituals makes an advent calendar Shock misses point of thread

SleepandYoga · 31/08/2019 19:44

I have been looking at he advent calendars and it looks like more of the same

I’m interested to see the M&S one as that was pretty good value for £35

The Lush one is far too expensive at £200!

SleepyKat · 31/08/2019 20:04

I was going to agree until I saw the Rituals one! Now just need to choose the £59 one or the £89 one! Grin

SleepandYoga · 31/08/2019 21:07

Going to look up the Rituals one now

Thread was counterproductive 🙈

Deathraystare · 01/09/2019 17:40

I can honestly say I have never bought any kind of advent calendar. Not even chocolate ones. What I have done though - in Debenhams they have trial sizes of stuff such as Estee Lauder wash off cleanser and their great cc cream (tinted), plus of bourse the Benefit minis and other brands stuff. I prefer to buy these (plus the Mac mini lipsticks from Mac) .

S0CKS · 01/09/2019 20:03

Can i just buy myself 25 small gifts and randomly pick them out of a gift bag each morning?

IPokeBadgers · 01/09/2019 21:26

Great to see the thread resurrected....I commented early on last year's and stood firm, and I'm not going to buy one this year either! I have so much, and don't need a load of mini products to add to my stash. But it is fun to look at this year's calendars Grin

JMAngel1 · 01/09/2019 21:43

I know what you're saying is right but wait, what about finding those absolute gems that you would never had found otherwise - Rodial Extreme Peel, Floral Street Ylang Ylang Espresso, Ren Lactic Acid toner, Prai Neck Deolletage cream. I can't resist, knowing that I may happen upon another must have item.

ExpletiveDelighted · 01/09/2019 21:57

I loved that Prai neck cream, still got the beautiful glittery pot

LazyLizzy · 01/09/2019 23:04

I jumped over from the other thread hoping to be dissuaded from buying one.
But I love Rituals so may just take a quick look Blush.
