Urgent! Garden party (posh!) Will I be overdressed?

First time I've ever posted in S&B. My husband has been invited to a garden party this afternoon (I've known about it for weeks) and I'm panicking that I'm going to be overdressed.

I have a beautiful and really flattering LBD to wear with my new snag tights and some suede black wedges. But I'm now wobbling! It's likely to be very posh and my DH has a lovely smart casual look and the kids will be smart but will I look ridiculous in a LBD? I'm overweight now and I'm tall (6ft) so the small wedge heels only come out very occasionally because my DH is shorter than I am.

It's a lovely sunny day here, which is Makin me worry more about being all in black. I can't post a picture because I'm not ready yet (still ironing all the shirts!)

What do you all think?

I would tend to wear colours rather than a black dress as I think they're more evening wear.
It's perfectly acceptable though (particularly if the alternative is a panicked trip to Marks) , and I think you'll rock the heels

Elledorado · 29/09/2018 10:42

What colour are the tights? If you are all black it may possibly look and feel heavy for a garden party. But not necessarily! I would wear hot pink or red lipstick to lift it a little and some silver or gold ball stud or pearl earrings (or large diamonds if you have them!). I would wear tan tights (or just some body bronzer) on the legs

TwoGinScentedTears · 29/09/2018 11:04

Tights are black. The dress is layered and has embellishments. It's almost a bit flapper-esque. It's very beautiful. I can totally jazz up my make up and I probably have a colourful pashmina I can wear with it.

Eeek. I had a totally different outfit planned but when I put it on earlier I'm the week I didn't feel good in it. This dress is really flattering and as soon as I put it on I felt good, but seeing the weather this morning has made me worried it's all a bit black Sad

My dsis lent me the dress. All a bit last minute, because of decided what I was wearing and wasn't worried. Until I tried it on.

I wouldnt worry about it. If you look and feel good in it, who gives a shit about the weather! I wouldnt bother with a pashmina, they often ruin a great dress imo

Gah81 · 29/09/2018 12:48

The Italians wear black in summer/outside and look wonderful. If you feel good then wear it. However, I would wear nude tights or bare legs if possible, instead of the black.

spacefighter · 29/09/2018 12:54

I wear black in the summer go for it and have a great time.

MrsJane · 29/09/2018 13:02

Can we see a picture?

It does sound a bit formal and sober for a sunny garden party. Have you got anything light and floaty in a softer colour?

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 29/09/2018 13:17

Second the nude tights. Do you have a bright or a light cardigan you could pop over?
Wedges good call for grass

RJnomore1 · 29/09/2018 13:19

If you feel good in it wear it.

peachypetite · 29/09/2018 13:20

It doesn't sound very garden party esque- do you have anything in a colour?

VioletCharlotte · 29/09/2018 13:26

Can you post a pic? It sounds more like the sort of dress you'd wear to an evening do. Do you have any other options?

Tartyflette · 29/09/2018 13:31

Bare legs if you've got a bit of colour on them. Enjoy the last of this great weather!

TwoGinScentedTears · 29/09/2018 13:35

I'm getting ready now. I'll see if I'm brave enough to post a pic!

My only other options are quite dressed down really! I'll finish putting my makeup on and re-try it all on.

If you feel good, then go for it.
Always better to be overdressed than underdressed

SpeckledyHen · 29/09/2018 14:22

If black is a good colour for you and you feel confident in it then you will look great . Go for it !

Lucked · 29/09/2018 14:26

I think I would need context of who is throwing it and why. Only ones I am aware of are the royal garden parties which are dressy

thenightsky · 29/09/2018 14:29

I think you'll look great. But maybe go for nude tights. Wear nice dark sunglasses to stop the dress looking too 'evening'.

MoltonSilver · 29/09/2018 15:22

Try it without any tights.

eurochick · 29/09/2018 15:59

It sounds like far too much. Sorry!

VioletCharlotte · 29/09/2018 16:43

Hope you have a great time, whatever you decided to wear! I'm sure you look fab Smile

TwoGinScentedTears · 29/09/2018 18:39

I'm back. I didn't wear it-it was too much. And I'm glad I didn't, I would have been way too overdressed!

And thanks all, really appreciated it!
