Super stylish stay-at-home-mums - come talk to me

For various reasons, I’m about to become a SAHM for a bit. Probably quite a bit. What shall I wear that looks stylish but is practical? And warm because I’m always cold. I can probably spend a few hundred quid to put myself a basic wardrobe together.

If it helps I’m late 30s, a size 14 (or 12 on a good day), with moderately big boobs.

What’s the other important stuff to keep me looking halfway respectable? (NB eyebrows are waxed and tinted religiously every three weeks or I look dead/like a weirdly haggard 12 year old.)

I'm not a SAHM but I do work part time from home so I guess face the same challenges? I have built up a good stock of cashmere jumpers, supplemented with some oversize merino jerseys, which I wear with skinnies or nice quality joggers (current faves are from petit bateau). I've also recently got some 'vintage' mum jeans and silk shirts from ebay (wish I had kept mine from 20 years ago now!) which are good for transitional weather. I definitely aim for quality and comfort but it also depends on the age of your kids - you don't want to be wearing cream cashmere if your kids are 2 and 4 and likely to spend the day wiping noses on you I guess!

Thanks, sorry, got sidetracked by a glass —bottle—of wine. Mine are definitely still at snot smearing age!

Currently it’s basically skinnies with whatever. I quite like the idea of quality joggers but not sure how to style them. Have Hush harems and just not sure what to do with them.

All ideas welcome

I'm not sure I'm super stylish but I am a sahm and often get complimented about what I'm wearing.
I do wonder sometimes if I'm a bit of mummy cliche but I suppose lots of people wear similar as it's practical and works.
Things I find work are-
Skinny joggers. I have camo and grey leopard print, I wear a round neck merino jumper(uniqlo) or a tshirt (usually black) trainers
Trainers- I love trainers so have a few. Stan smiths, black and white new balance, red gazelles, grey vans, golden goose. On my wish list are a pair of air max.
Jackets-black battered leather biker, Zara black blazer, oversized denim jacket, parka with a big fur hood.
Jeans or various styles, girlfriend, ripped skinnies, charcoal grey, very dark blue.
Cashmere jumpers I've got a few but to be honest I can't be arsed with them they're toohot, a pain to wash and expensive. After washing my beautiful Bella Freud on a 40 wash and shrinking it I vowed never again.
Long line vests layered with shirts, v neck slouchy tshirts (h and m and Zara)
I like sweatshirts too, Stradivarius, mango and pull and bear are good.
I also have an extensive collection of black ankle boots, my favourite outfit at the mo is girlfriend jeans rolled up with black ankle boots and a slouchy black jumper.

I really like long skirts with sweatshirts and trainers but I always feel a bit porky!

i never know what to wear as i want look smart on the school run but im also changing stinky bathroom bins, mopping floors and dusting!!

i have started to change out of school run clothes for days i know im at home doing jobs/pottering.

i wear the standard mum uniform of blue stripe blouses tucked in or if they are an oversized style then left out, navy /grey knits and jeggings with a faux suede biker jacket in a blue navy colour.

trainers are essential for me as heels or boots of any sort hurt me.

Growingboys · 29/09/2018 22:08

What trainers are the stylish SAHMs wearing now please?

I need new ones and just sent back the Air and Grace ones I ordered as they weren't comfortable.

Thinking maybe Air Max but not sure re: colour...

WilburIsSomePig · 29/09/2018 22:49

I wish I'd cared when I was a SAHM. I really didn't and went about like a bag of shite half the time. I wish I'd made more of an effort, for me.

Highlove · 30/09/2018 12:02

I’m also interested in trainers! Can’t decide what to go for!

Just change into old housework gear when you get back so you don't trash your decent clothes?
That's what we do. I stick an old t shirt and jog bottoms on for housework and hope I no one calls round!

ViserionTheDragon · 30/09/2018 14:20

On the subject of trainers, I really like Superga - good quality and hard wearing! Great to wear with skinniest etc.

ViserionTheDragon · 30/09/2018 14:20

Skinnies not skinniest!

I'm not sure if they're still 'in' or not, but I wear converse

Highlove · 30/09/2018 22:06

I love Converse but they are sooooo uncomfy. I really love the Air and Grace leopard print but not sure I can spend £200 on trainers... They’re out of stock anyway. But I’m reminded I had my eye on some silver Superga. Might revisit.

I would absolutely not call myself 'super stylish' but I am a SAHM / work from home so I try and make a half arsed effort.

My go to is black Topshop Joni jeans with a slightly oversized slouch t shirt or good quality cotton shirt. I have a couple of Hush wide jersey tops which I bloody love and are smart but beautifully comfortable.

I wear Stan Smiths, Gazelles, Superstars or ankle boots. Boots are French Connection or Topshop (I have wide feet).

Over the top I normally wear a slouchy, chunky knit cardigan or my much loved grey coatigan from Zara. Or a Topshop parka. I have a wide range of oversized scarves in muted colours for the colder weather.

I keep jewellery and make up to a minimum. Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser is my best friend. I keep my hair trimmed / highlighted and normally wear it in a messy bun because I can't be bothered.

fishonabicycle · 01/10/2018 08:51

I am sometimes at home, and we have smartish casual at work now and a few people have said I look well dressed. Dark skinny jeans/boyfriend jeans turned up with vest and long cardigan, or with cream/black blouse. Wear silver supergas, snakeskin kitten heel slingbacks, or ankle boots. I don't wear patterns much (I am too small and they don't really suit me). Or wear shortish dress/skirt with opaque tights.
