Hi everyone,

Superdrug semi permanent Cool Blonde colour sensations - was the ONLY one i could find that didn't give my hair a ginger/ red tone (i'm not a red head but for some reason dyes turn my hair this colour)

Took me ages to find and now they have stopped it suddenly :(

Anyone got any suggestions of others that don't turn gingery ? (can't afford professional colouring).

Thanks !!.... not sure what i'm going to do :(

I dyed my hair with a mix of camomile tea, turmeric and instant coffee recently. 6 camomile teabags, quarter teaspoon turmeric and quarter teaspoon of instant coffee brewed in teapot. Left to cool. Drenched dry hair in mixture. Dried with hairdryer and then rinsed. Gave golden hair tone. It is cheap and readily available. You could try this on a strand of hair to see what it does to your hair.

I buy Majirel and peroxide and mix it up myself. It works out cheaper than box dyes and covers greys really well. You’d need a shade with .1 after the number - they’re cool toned and have no red in them (I have the same problem with dye going ginger on my hair and these ashy tones seem to neutralise it out.) You’d probably need the 9.1 shade if you’re a light blonde.

It covered my grey, op. If you do this make sure you go easy on the turmeric. People use it to dye their hair bright yellow. It is seriously powerful.

Leafgrass that’s so interesting. So you dry the mixture into your hair then rinse again?

I feel your pain. My hair turns all dyes red too! My current hairdresser does not seem to be interested in my bleating about not wanting any red hue and month after month I come back after a trip to the salon with a kind of gingery mucky blonde colour when I actually wanted a nice brown. Sorry to hijack your thread OP but @GirInTheDirtyShirt would you have any idea what kind of Majirel shade I'd need for a mid-dark brown with no red hue? I'm tired of paying salon prices if I could do my own dye better!

Yes, thewine. Well, I did this initially because I wanted to see what the colour looked like. But then I thought I should rinse it because I didn't want it to stain my pillows. Thinking about it, I suppose the heat might help the dye stain the hair. I've only done this once as an experiment. I was pretty pleased with the result. I'm doing it again today but I've also added a red bush tea bag as I want a slightly warmer blonde, this time. Dark haired people could use all coffee or black tea.

You need an Ash Blonde, any semi permanent or permanent dye will work and as long as you choose the Ash colour you'll be fine.

westcountrycat · 28/09/2018 16:04

hi, thanks for all the answers, i remember trying an ASH before and did the same thing, it was a nice and easy, perhapsi should try a different brand.

thanks for the tip about .1at the end, is this across all dyesgirlinthedirtyshirt ?

This happened to me with John Frieda. I too turn ginger with any red toned dye.

Lately ive used derma 10 from.... Poundland! It is a nice light blond colour, i use good quality shampoo, conditioner and treatments so hair is still in good condition. Bought on the recommendation from friends after trhing garnier and hating it(dryed hair out)

To cover grey I use L’Oreal Excellence Natural Light Blonde in 9. You don’t want a 9.3 or 9.13 because 3 is the red in the dye. I used 9.31 once and went Rose Gold lol

The no 1 in the colour represents and ash tone so this is ok but cannlook a bit grey
