Does anyone know mens chest sizes?

I want to get a t-shirt for dp as a surprise but the chest was 40". Is that a small or med as ive tried rooting through his tops but they all say M.

I'm sure that someone who knows better will come along, but I think dp is a 40, and he is a medium.

40" is a medium - but sometimes the t-shirts are rather short. In that case get a large one.
