£600 engagement ring

My boyfriend and I had a serious chat this weekend about getting engaged soon (!); the main conclusions were that our budget for the ring is about £600 and also that I'd like to choose it myself.

I'd rather have a coloured stone than a diamond, and also I'd prefer second-hand as it's more ethical and more likely to fit our budget.

Does anyone know if the second-hand jewellers in Hatton Garden would laugh us out of their shops at such a low budget, and if so, any recommendations for where else to look? We're based in London.

Thanks Smile

I know you said not a diamond but there are lab grown gem stones such as Moissanite (looks like a diamond but you can get coloured ones).

Morganite is a beautiful stone but I was worried I would damage it (I am very clumsy) I am actually getting a Moissanite ring for my 20th wedding anniversary present.

To show you how pretty diamond like they are have a look here

Also the whole you must spend a stupid amount of money on a ring for an engagement ring, and a diamond ring one at that, was a marketing campaign by a diamond company. Spending money does not = how much you are loved.

I hope you find something lovely and congratulations.

It’s a good sum to find yourself a lovely vintage ring!

I am going to get myself a piece from here (when I can manage to save for it and not keep spending in drips and drabs!):

Yes, be very careful with stone hardness if you want to be able to wear it every day. Diamond, sapphire, Ruby (which is actually a type of sapphire) are the hardest. I don’t know what would be next best after that...

Brighton, The Lanes has a selection of antique and jewellery shops. I have bought rings there in the past, one of them a pretty engagement ring. Not just secondhand but very old.

I was going to suggest a day trip to Brighton or Birmingham too

Why have you resurrected a year old thread? Assume she will have a ring by now...

BigFatBloomers · 17/09/2019 16:03

So she can advertise her jewellery business? Hmm

JetPlanesMeeting · 17/09/2019 16:54

God I missed that this was old due to the date being Tuesday and September. Grrrr.

As RosyPP says there should be some rings in your budget in AR Ullman. My fiance & I bought my ring in Hatton Garden in February. Our budget was a bit more, but we tried on a few in there and they had a nice selection, although I ended up going for a new one from a different shop.
I'd recommend having a walk around and having a look in the handful of shops that sell vintage. They will stick to your budget and there's no pressure. Along the same street as AR Ullman (Greville Street I think) there are a couple of other second hand/vintage jewellery shops. They had some lovely stuff.

Oh I missed that this was an old thread too!

Ninkaninus · 17/09/2019 18:41

Oh shit I missed the zombie factor too! I just got excited by engagement ring/jewellery...

BigFatBloomers · 17/09/2019 20:09

I've now seen a really nice ring that I neither need nor can afford on one of those websites and I really want it.
Blooming zombie threads!!
