How do jeans work then?

I've never really been into jeans but am converted by seeing people look great in them in passing at the moment. I do own a couple of pairs from charity shops but i'm increasingly aware that they make me look like a sack of potatoes. I'm a size 12 and hour-glassy shaped (although a little overweight), with nice legs so it should theoretically be possible to get something that makes me feel/look better not worse, right?

The trouble is, now i'm looking for them specifically, I cannot find anything that looks normal. The skinny/jegging ones appear to taper people down to a point like a carrot and show every spare-tyre lump which can't be the look they were going for. The high top ones are I assume comfortable but not particularly flattering? I've always gone for boot cut dark blue ones before but am aware that my fashion sense is not from this century let alone this decade. And i have no idea where to start with brands.

Any advice, oh wearers of classy jeans?

Jeans epiphany for me when I saw a full.length pic of myself in skinnies and though OMG parsnip legs! And DH came up behind me and looked at the same photo and said "your legs & bum look hot in those". So, yes, parsnip legs, carrot legs vegetable f*cking legs ... OR hot female legs! FwIW I wear topshop jamies and love them. Also uniqlo cigarette skinnies

I wear topshop Joni they have a high Lycra content and are high waisted I find they suck my mum tum in like Spanx do. Also think cuffing at the bottom is necessary and wear with mostly trainers favourites are leopard print slip ons and metallic lace ups or brogues for when wearing a blouse or I want to look a bit smarter.

Oh FFS, delphguelph...
-sobs into doubtless unfashionable handkerchief-
Right...tell me of these shoe rules, particularly if any of them allow me to avoid pneumonia of the ankles

Iceberg ankles are a perennial by product of a good jeans look.

The alternatives all look terrible on me. I can't do jeans tucked into boots.

ChimesOnSundayMorn · 21/09/2018 18:46

But I'd love to hear how it can be overcome. Currently I stop wearing jeans in favour of dresses and boots when it gets cold

fishfingersandketchup · 21/09/2018 18:55

But....but...what have you been wearing all this time instead of jeans?ShockConfused

delphguelph · 21/09/2018 18:55

Tell me about it

delphguelph · 21/09/2018 18:56

Iceberg ankles

^

for a minute I thought there were actual shoes called Iceberg ankles, as in ankle boots that resemble icebergs

I need to go home

GreenthoughtInAGreenShade · 21/09/2018 19:22

I refuse to believe that sensible intelligent women are going around with purposefully arctic ankles when fluffy socks and boots and, y’know, trousers that fit have been invented.

Is the ankle boot (as mentioned by pp above) the answer?

fishfingersandketchup - i know it doesn’t sound realistic, but i wear dresses and knee high boots, smart work trousers, and long maxi dresses for slobbing around ay home. I’ve just never really thought of jeans as an option until now. I’m starting to think i should have just stayed in my comfort zone...

In winter I swap to boots, personally pointy ankle heeled ones and flat riding ones.

fishfingersandketchup · 21/09/2018 19:55

No I am actually slightly in awe of you! I just can't imagine not pulling on my comfy old jeans the minute I get home. However I have neither style nor elegance so just imagination me!Grin

fishfingersandketchup · 21/09/2018 19:55

Oops ignore me!!
