The thing is if your scalp burns then no matter how ugly a hat makes you look or how sweaty your head gets, it's still much better than the chance of skin cancer at some stage in the future. I assume that even if the cancer is easily treatable by scraping it off at an early stage, it will still leave a bald patch.

One of the hats I got from Accessorize was a crochet one, and it's lovely and cool because of gaps in the pattern at the sides, but still protective because there are no gaps on the crown.

I was wearing a hat today whilst gardening - it just felt uncomfortable with the sun beating on my head. My 'gardening' hat is a small brimmed straw job from M&S. Not sure that I'd wear it out though. How about a canvas hat like this www.barbour.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=products.view&am p;ProductID=649&StartRow=25&RangeID=2&New=0& PCategoryID=6&PSubCategoryID=&FeatureID=

The colour in the picture is rather icky, but it comes in other colours and the shape might work.

Hmm, ok I'm looking at that hat and thinking maybe it is a bit more 2 Fat Ladies than Boden model. If it's just for the beach or whatever though, does it really have to be that stylish?

wait, but I am lily-skinned!

MissTea4Me · 09/06/2007 23:05

look at me, look at me!

bran · 09/06/2007 23:08

I could be saying "look at me, I'm lily-skinned" by wearing a hat. Or I could be protecting myself because direct sunshine hurts.

Oh wait, you only object to hats on English women, I'm fine to wear a hat then.

If you want to be a twat, get a hat.

MissTea4Me · 09/06/2007 23:18

I'm only half English, does that mean I'm free to wear half a hat? Would that be like one of those Jordan-style visors?

Rhubarb · 09/06/2007 23:19

knickers?

NormaStiltonFletcher · 09/06/2007 23:20

I've just bought a cowboy style sunhat from George for £2.49! anyway after looking just as silly in a baseball cap. I've decided at least it's a little more adventurous and it does look far better than a baseball cap on me.

Idreamofdaleks · 10/06/2007 08:19

Go to accessorize and try lots on!

Hats keep you cooler - I always wear one in hot sun

Scarves can also look good but as someone else said its about gettting your confidence up

Issy · 10/06/2007 09:25

"no issy that is terrible"

No Cod, don't hold back and spare my feelings! Actually it is fairly rank. I'd had rather a lot to drink last night and was more excited by the new linking process than the hat.

filthymindedvixen · 10/06/2007 09:43

I was always of the same opinion tghat people look like twats in hats but when i had my vile eye infection and it was so bright even sunglasses weren't enough and i had to wear something. So opted for cod's hated black bucket hat. it looked fab with certain things (jeans, combats) but not with others. Anyway, as someone else pointed out, once you've had to wear a hat for a week or so, you start feeling used to the idea and it's rather good. I also have a cheap but nice staw cowboy which i got 2 years ago andpeople are always asking we where i got it frm and evying it.

If you get away with the parasolthing please let me know - i think it will look rather fab!

we have to accept in this country that we are going to have to become a little more 'European' and start to care about ourselves in the hot sun! Bring 'em on! Here's to English twats in hats

FrannyandZooey · 10/06/2007 09:45

what is wrong, precisely, with looking like an eccentric?
