What does a 16 year old boy wear to a wedding?

Just the above really! Big family wedding coming up, and my 16 year old son has been “promoted” to a whole day guest with 3 weeks notice!!!
When he wa just going to be going to the reception he was going to wear smart shirt and trousers, along with his school shoes 😁. However as he’s now a whole day guest I’d really like to “treat” him to a more “grown up” outfit....
We’re Scottish so there’s the potential for a kilt, but he’s not sure if he’s keen, so if not a kilt, what ?

If not keen on kilt I would stick with smart trousers and shirt. Or did he wear a suit to prom? Use that.

SheSparkles · 17/08/2018 22:49

He doesn’t have a suit yet-school leaving age here is 18 so the peom’s a couple of years away yet! (And he’s still growing like a weed!)

hire a kilt...he may as well get the feel of it, he'll surely have school dances to go to!

either that or leave him be as an evening guest, he's old enough to be left to his own devices during the day surely? Does he actually want the go to the day part of the wedding?

Shirt, tie and trousers should be fine.

DH refused to wear a kilt to recent family wedding cos he's English and it's not what English blokes do apparently. Hmm He wore suit and I made him wear tartan tie.

Bouledeneige · 17/08/2018 22:52

Suit or kilt.

Thesearepearls · 17/08/2018 22:54

Definitely got to be a kilt in clan tartan

FGS what's the point of inviting someone scottish to a wedding if they're not going to display their calves?

butlerswharf · 17/08/2018 22:55

Nice shirt and trousers. Only a tie if he fancies wearing one.

SheSparkles · 17/08/2018 23:08

@MsHomeSlice, he’s keen enough to go during the day, the “promotion” from evening to day guest has come about as some of this invited can’t attend. He was very much going to be left to his own devices during the day 😂
I’d love to get him into a kilt, he has the height and build for it-although show me the man who doesn’t! His dad will be wearing his own kilt, as will a lot of the other men. I’m not sure if we could get his tartan as a hire as it’s not a very common one (traditionally you wear the tartan of your mother’s clan, not your father’s).
I need to get something from the kilt shop, so I might drag him in with me and try to get him to try one on to either rule it in or rule it out.....

Update! It’s a suit! He just isn’t up for wearing a kilt, which is a shame, but he has the rest of his life for that, I think he’s just a bit self conscious as this is the first time he’s had to dress formally since he was a fair bit younger and just wore what he was told 😂.
We’ve managed to get him what looks like a decent enough suit and shoes from Boohoo.com, for a grand total of £87!

ahh fab...16 is an iffy time to be launching into kilts! :o Mine had a couple of goes at primary age and stole the show at two weddings :o so they are pre prepped!

have a good time! :o

SheSparkles · 18/08/2018 19:31

Thanks @MsHomeSlice, like yours he’s worn a kilt when he was a lot younger and yes he stole the show then too! I’m hoping it’ll be the 21st birthday present! Looking forward to the wedding, it’ll be fab to be with the whole family 😁

At that age my step-son would have worn light trousers, white shirt, tie and navy blazer with loafers.
Recent family wedding nephews of that age wore suit and tie or smart shirt, trousers and tie.

MoltonSilver · 18/08/2018 22:59

I'm sure the suit is lovely but oh, I do love a kilt.
