Cocktail dress for summer party with glamour pusses in the US - help me please stylistas!

Left it late/procrastinated for a dress for a 'big birthday' party with an American friend in the US in a couple of weeks. This is a fairly bling, well-heeled crowd, and for sure all the women will be dolled up to the 9's. I hate the Stepford Wives/overly 'done' look, and ideally would like something glam but edgy, with nice fabric or a good detail. Hopefully something I could wear again with a jacket/scarf at Christmas.
I'm a size 14, prefer to be covered up, and have fat legs!
Just spend a good hour trawling through the department stores to no avail. Any new sources would be fab, thanks!

Where abouts is the party being held? Is it at someone's home or a venue?

I'm in Canada and for a party at a house with well heeled crowd I usually wear a very simple dress in a block colour with some amazing/unusual jewellery, I always wear flats too, have to at the minute thanks to hip issues, but dressy ones, like Badgley Mishka or similar.
If its at a venue I'd be guided more by the kind of venue, iyswim.

Thanks all. Lovely stuff, though I couldn't wear the Reiss dress as I have far too much boobage going on. The party is in the northwest, so won't be too hot: mid-20s, and is in a club/restaurant.

I'm going into London later this week so will be heading for the shops, armed with your ideas...

By Malen Birger and Paul &Joe both have gorgeous black jumpsuits at the moment. If you are less keen on your legs they are a great alternative to a dress and could be worn with bright jewellery now then statement earrings and a sequin blazer at Christmas.
