Should I go back and complain about my hair?

I had my balayage done last Thursday by a trainee and paid a reduced rate to have it done. She was doing it alone without supervision and when I asked she had been doing her apprenticeship for 5 months and had started colours 1-2 months ago.

She seemed to leave the bleach on for an excessive amount of time and after washing it at home it seems dry and little bits are coming off in my hand.

Do I go back and complain? I've been growing my hair for ages and I'm currently sat with olaplex no.3 on my head worrying.

How long did she leave the bleach on? Was your hair previously coloured using box dye and if so did she know about it.

crazycatgal · 06/08/2018 11:54

I went in for a consultation a few days before the colour. She knew that I'd previously had highlights done at a salon, most recently was 6 months ago, so she knew that I'd previously has bleach.

She finished applying the bleach at 4pm. She washed the back foils off at around 5.30 and washed the front and sides off at 6pm.

I would go back, an hour and a half with bleach on is crazy. She should know that.

Raven88 · 06/08/2018 11:59

40 minutes is the limit for bleach to be left on. I've have my hair lightened monthly and it's never broke . The damage is probably where she started.

crazycatgal · 06/08/2018 11:59

I feel like such an idiot for not saying anything at the time, I knew it seemed like a crazy length of time but I have anxiety and felt like I couldn't say anything.

I'm just worried that i'll go in and they will fob me off saying that she's a trainee so what did I expect.

What should I ask for when I go in?

Is an olaplex treatment with a cut alright to ask for to sort out the ends that are snapping off?

If she is a trainee then she should have been supervised...go and complain and don't back down!!

LockedOutOfMN · 06/08/2018 14:01

Yes, I'd go back. They should give you a trim or cut (if you want it) to get rid of some of the damage, and also treatments to restore the condition.

Guest6565 · 06/08/2018 14:06

Olaplex No.3 will do almost nothing - honestly the majority of the damage has been done and often you wont see the most of it for days/weeks.

I would ask for a Olaplex treatment and a cut but there will be irrepairable damage and the sheer fact you have to get your hair cut when you didn't intend to, I would expect a refund of some sort.

The trainee left the highlights on too long i'm afraid! I'm all for trainees but having been one and seen them, i would never ask for that service, its a technique that can take an awful long time for someone learning. (Not for all, but its all too common!)

Knowivedonewrong · 06/08/2018 14:08

As an ex hairdresser, I think you should definitely go back.
I can't believe she was left unsupervised.

crazycatgal · 06/08/2018 14:18

@Guest6565 I didn't approach her and ask for that technique, she was advertising her services for balayage and highlights so I booked assuming that she knew what she was doing.

OP posts:
crazycatgal · 06/08/2018 14:19

I also assumed that she would be supervised as well because how is she supposed to learn if left to it? There were other stylists in the salon including the owner and none of them checked what she was doing even once.

Readyforapummelling · 06/08/2018 14:24

I would go back just for the reason that the girl is training and needs to know she has fucked up. She won't learn otherwise and the salon should give you cut/refund whatever to make up for it.

Personally I would go in and complain but say "as she is training, I thought I better let you know so she doesn't do It again"

Readyforapummelling · 06/08/2018 14:24

Woman. I meant woman.

BaronessBomburst · 06/08/2018 14:27

Complain.
Even I know that bleach shouldn't be left on for that long and I'm not studying hairdressing. Confused

Guest6565 · 06/08/2018 14:33

As a trainee she should have had you should have probably filled in a client card and potentially even a disclaimer. And if it were for her training, someone should have assessed the work after.

I feel you've been slightly had at this salon, I would complain!

crazycatgal · 06/08/2018 15:24

I didn't fill anything in or sign anything and nobody supervised her during the process or assessed her work after she had finished.

It seems like she is being had as well as me. An apprentice is supposed to learn not just be left to it so early on.

How does the hair actually look? Does it look damaged? I'd get a haircut if I were you. How long is it?

Definitely go back and complain, they can't possibly say that she's a trainee and what did you expect because 1 YOU PAID even if a reduced rate and 2. She should've been supervised!!!!

PingusPaws · 06/08/2018 16:12

@crazycatgal. think you nailed it when you thought "she is being had, as well as you".
She should have been under supervision by the salon, as she was new to the technique of bleach, time in and time out, 15 minutes can make all the difference between nicely done, or frayed ends.
