I have never had my nails done and want quite a natural look or at least neutral and polished.

What do I get to achieve this sort of thing?

Try Margaret Dabbs nail cream (from Space NK) , it is amazing. Fake nails might trash your nails even more.

Avoid them like the plague... it’s just not worth it... they ruin your nails even further x

You’d be best to get gel over your own natural nails. Once you start adding length with extensions etc it puts pressure on the nail bed and weakens them (that’s my own experience- had many different kinds!) If you just get gel and have it removed properly each time before fresh gel every 3 weeks your nails will grow stronger underneath. Use cuticle oil and a good hand and nail cream. Repair odd cracks and splits with fibreglass and then gel over that (any good nail technician can do that).

Gel polish at a push, but even then if they are prone to splitting I wouldn’t personally

Find a nail technician who can give you a couple of layers of builder gel - that will give them strengt, then you can have a colour gel overlay and it'll last you anything up to three weeks.

The gel itself won't trash your nails if it is removed properly - if you pick, pull, peel or scrape you will certainly damage the nail plate. They need to be soaked off, but you can do that at home with the right equipment (pure acetone, cotton wool, silver foil, and a cuticle stick).

Incidentally, my nails are soft like wet paper and peel/split, have done all my life - but I do my own overlays with gel and have no problems. I started using gel 8 years ago.

Two of my nails have ridges that just split on that point. Is there something I can buy over the counter to strengthen them? The rest grow just fine and are strong but because of these two I have to keep them all short.

Thanks everyone for advice/input 🙂
