Cotton night-shirts/night-dresses that aren't floral or twee

Going in to hospital soon for major abdominal surgery.

I need some new nightwear. Not allowed pjs because of nature of op.

I'm sure I won't care what I look like when the time comes, but just to make the prospect of the enforced hospital visit a bit more appealing, I'd like to buy some cotton night shirts or night dresses that aren't straight out of the 1950s.

They are surprisingly difficult to find! Everything seems to have florals or twee bows. (Save for hugely expensive brands like Calvin Klein.)

Any ideas anyone please?

Try peacocks I had a couple from there a few weeks ago no frills bows or flowers in sight

TinklyLittleLaugh · 21/07/2018 18:33

John Lewis had a few last time I looked. The nicest ones were ££££ though.

StoatOfManyColours · 21/07/2018 18:36

What about this?

Nikkynakkynoo · 21/07/2018 18:38

Cyberjammies? They have a sale on their website at the moment, and are also stocked in John Lewis

bluemumsbluedog · 21/07/2018 18:39

They had some in tesco's a few weeks ago!

Silverstar2 · 21/07/2018 18:48

H & M had some last week, about £10 each.

Good luck with the op.

Knowivedonewrong · 21/07/2018 19:05

Asda have some nice long t shirt night dresses.

Scoopofchaff · 21/07/2018 19:47

Thank you so much for your suggestions everyone! They are much appreciated!

I love the pure cotton white ones (although prefer a small sleeve nowadays rather than straps). Also, forgot to mention that I will be buying on-line because I live abroad (continental Europe).

Bluemumsdog I love that pale blue one!

Also particularly like shirt-like ones with a bit of a collar.

Going to check if all the shops you all mention deliver abroad ...thanks again!

I bought one (100% cotton) from matalan last week for 7 pounds. If was pink n floral though but they had more designs. Dont know if you can get it delivered to Europe, but in case if you do decide for matalan check their size as i going their length a little bit smaller than usual.

All the best for your surgery

There is definitely a gap in the market for reasonably priced, fairly plain, “grown up” night wear.

I want a nighties or pjs that have bust support, no bows, no frills, no silly cartoons and no bloody twee slogans on them.

I can get all that but only if I pay £££ for it.

Monty27 · 23/07/2018 01:58

T-shirts. Long enough so you can get in and out of bed with dignity.
Good luck Flowers

Scoopofchaff · 23/07/2018 06:52

Thank you again for more suggestions! (And for the best wishes!). Again, much appreciated!

I did wonder about t-shirts but I am quite tall so would need really long ones!

I'll check out Matalan too, thanks. Have already ordered 3 from Peacocks; not sure how many I'll need tbh.

NonaGrey I could have written your post! Why do nightwear manufacturers think grown women want baby koalas or cats plastered over nighties?! I am in my early fifties fhs! And why would I choose insipid florals when I don't wear them at any other time?

Also in-built bust support would be fantastic! My temperature control is all over the place currently; it would be wonderful not to have to wear a bra in addition to a nightie, especially in a hot hospital!

Try Uniqlo (and I think they have bust support tops, not sure about nightie types). H and M also do good cotton nightwear of all kinds!
Good luck with the surgery. And you are absolutely right to get yourself the right nightshirt or whatever. It will help.

I've had some from Primark, one I love is navy and cream stripes. I must admit though I love my monkey one

TollgateDebs · 23/07/2018 12:32

I bought one yesterday in Sainsburys, Tu, as plan to use it as a light cover up, to help deal with the weather - it buttons up from top to bottom so may suit you better and was in a very soft grey print, so looks good too. They had a few in the sale too, so worth a look.

bonzo77 · 23/07/2018 12:37

I’ve had lovely (but ££££) ones from White Company before. They’ve lasted really well. My favourite has cap sleeves, a few buttons and is of very fine woven cotton. Very cool to wear.

Scoopofchaff · 23/07/2018 20:14

Thank so much for all the suggestions everybody; I am going to be checking each and every one! Will report back!

I've got some nice ones from. M and s. Agree completly about ones with cats etc on. I hate looking like a birthday card!

ginghamstarfish · 24/07/2018 11:08

Lands End have good quality pure cotton jersey 'sleep tee' long t shirt type, but I find them a bit hot (and unflattering for the less than svelte). Good luck though OP, it's hard to find decent non-Disney/cutesy/slogan/sequin nightdresses, and of a reasonable length. I've started making my own ...

Gahbahboo · 24/07/2018 12:49

I often get plain cotton Tshirt dresses. I have some from H&M and Asos. They fit the bill.

fantasia243 · 25/07/2018 14:04

Sainsbury's always seem to do at one pure cotton nightshirt in a non-twee design.

Scoopofchaff · 25/07/2018 18:22

Thank you again for more responses!

Buying t-shirt dresses instead is a really good idea!

And yes Ginghamstarfish I've been thinking of making my own too!

The one I want doesn't exist - crisp black cotton (not jersey) with straps instead of sleeves / mini length.
