Bollywood Ball - what on earth do I wear?!

DH and I are invited to a Bollywood Ball in June.

The dress code says Black Tie - Flamboyant!

What on earth do we wear?

I am assuming Dh can get away with black tie suit and team with a jazzy bow tie.

But what do I wear?!

Quite like something like this but think I am too short for the longer length top. Hmmm...will keep searching.

Or do you think the bottom of the top bit would be taken up successfully?

should do, ring them up and ask. I usually get the outfits delivered in about two working days.

Chopster · 31/05/2007 12:28

how short are you? Most asian women are shortish anyway, so it prob wouldn't need taking up.

I am soo

I'd be very tempted to go with a sari, as long as you know someone who can put it on properly.

Chopster · 31/05/2007 12:29

jsut seen you are 5 foot - that is prob about the height of most of my indian relatives!

Sugarfree · 31/05/2007 18:27

I have got a wonderful book out of the library today, all about saris.
Chopster, can I ask how wide a sari is?I'm 5'7 so is it going to be skimming above my ankles?

Chopster · 01/06/2007 09:46

when I tried one on, it reached my ankles easily and I'm 5'11, I suppose it depends how low you wear it, and I think a lot of my relatives just tuck it in more at the waistband of the petticoat that is worn underneath. The one I tried, belonged to the boys great gran, who is less than 5 foot!

Chopster · 01/06/2007 09:51

/link{http://www.sarisafari.com/hownivi.html/this} link is pretty good, you can see how long the sari is width ways and all the excess amterial jsut gets tucked into the petticoat. Styles vary according to area. My family tend to wear that sort of style with the end going over the back, or you get the southern india styles which have a bit hanging down the front.
