Any barristers out there - what to wear to Inner Temple garden party?

I have been asked to accompany a rather gorgeous man to a garden party at Inner Temple but have no idea what to wear. Any clues? I don’t want to under/over dress...
Google pics wasn’t particularly helpful, for once.

Not a barrister but have been to lots of these.

Anything smartish will do - there is a lot of leeway depending on the scale of where you want to be. Assuming this is an Inn/law event (rather than a random garden party using the Inner Temple as a hired location), many of the women barristers/judges will come straight from work and will be in suits - so you can get away with a work suit. However, plenty of women will wear dresses and dress up a bit. It's more casual Henley than super formal Ascot.

So if you want to go straight from work that's fine; if you want to dress up in a nice dress that's fine too. I would say though it is a conservative audience so I'd avoid anything too short or too cleavagey/slutty because you might stand out too much. Avoid jeans/trainers/too casual.

Unless you are going to not move from the marquee there is gravel and a lot of grass so it would be more sensible to go for a wedge/flat shoe, more solid heel than a spike heel.

There are some pictures of last years Summer Party on p.124- 125 of last years year book here:

and there will be pictures from other years in the older year books if you can be bothered to look. Ignore the men's striped blazers though. It won't help!

Wow! Sounds exciting. Nothing helpful to add, just wanted to say that I hope the date goes well!!!

Yes. I would wear smart day wear. Cool linen dress perhaps. Perhaps summer wedding, but don’t go OTT. As already said, I would not wear anything too revealing, mainly because you will probably feel uncomfortable in it.

Yes it’s very exciting as I recently got divorced following a very difficult marriage. Can’t quite believe I’ve met someone so lovely but I have no expectations beyond the garden party.

I think I’ve sorted out my outfit based on the comments. It’s a simple but beautiful and well-cut outfit which I’ll jazz up with interesting accessories. Nothing that would be unsuitable.

Also see this photo at the Temple Women's Forum garden party in the Inner Temple this week which illustrates what I was talking about - black work suits/dresses amongst the nice summer little bit more dressy options.

Thank you! I looked at Inner Temple’s Twitter feed - plenty of pics there.
