What is this item of clothing called and are there any around?

I've been looking at old family photos this weekend and found some of a rather younger looking me on a holiday many a few years ago. I'm wearing something that I distinctly remember, but I can't think what it is called. Probably a 'vintage' item since this was c.1993, but very useful - basically a knee length skirt, quite full at the hem, but actually sewn like a pair of shorts. It looks like a lightweight summer skirt, and made out of lightweight fabric so quite floaty. No shorts sewn into it, so not a skort. Good for hot weather, and I used to wear them for cycling in the summer without worrying about sudden breezes.

The best I could think of is 'knee length culotte' or 'flared skort' but neither of these produce the right thing online. I wouldn't mind wearing them again on holiday this year, and DD liked the idea. What are they?!

They’re culottes. It’s just that the ones around now are a lot longer than those of yore

BigGapMum · 24/06/2018 18:00

I'd call them cullottes. The ones that I had back in those days were quite full and looked like an A line skirt. They were certainly more full than the cullottes I've just seen online.

Culottes

Standstilling · 24/06/2018 18:02

Just looked and all the culottes now look like flared cropped trousers, apart from school culottes which have that proper 'skirt tucked up your bum' look from the back.

Gaucho skirt? Divided Skirt?

Knittedfairies · 24/06/2018 18:07

A divided riding skirt?

AdaColeman · 24/06/2018 18:09

Yes another name for them is Divided Skirt. You are right, they were lovely for summer wear!

A skort, sort of halfway between a skirt & shirts I had a lovely denim one in the late eighties.

Ignore me hadn’t read the thread properly 😳

That ASOS pair is the closest to the lovely ones I had in the early 90s. Sort of mid-thigh length and very flattering.

BexleyRae · 24/06/2018 18:33

There were some culottes in primark the other week, thin cotton material (probably a bit more polyester than cotton) and probably mid calf on meat 5ft 1

Thank you! Those things on ASOS look like the right kind of style. Maybe culottes have just got longer in the last decade! I'll have a look for divided skirts as well. Glad that other people remember them and that I'm not the only person hankering after a pair now.

I'm marginally concerned that I might find them less appropriate now that my thighs are usually preceded by the word 'thunder' but at the time they were comfortable and I convinced myself that it was a flattering look. When I think about the other things I wore at that age, it was probably one of my more flattering styles Blush
