Calling all those stylish people who don't manage to look polished

When reading the threads on how to look polished and expensive I'm always slightly in awe of the people who manage to pull the look off/give sage advice, because -even though it's a great look - I'll never be one of either of them. That doesn't mean I look scruffy, just that I've got a different kind of style.
Think smart casual for work, a fair few piercings and visible tatoo, hair always dyed in an unnatural colour (my mum used to describe my look as "juvenile asbo candidate", but even she had to admit the other day that she might have been a tad wrong on that one Glitterball) .

So would anyone care for a thread for the un-polished, but nevertheless stylish? My hair is currently a deep green, I found the perfect colour coulottes to go with that. Or a smart black dress with a bright orange cardi. I'd love to hear how other people incorporate their own idea of aesthetics into their workwear!

Hello! Another piercings, tattoos and bright hair person (currently red and purple). There was a quirky thread a while ago I used to love.

I just bought these jacquard print boots

AKingdomForACarrotstick · 22/06/2018 12:30

These boots look fab Herald Do you wear them for work? I'm self-employed, hardly ever meet my clients, so luckily I don't have to stick to a particular "work uniform", but I still like to look like I mean business, if you know what I mean. I kind of puts me in a professional frame of mind.

Red and purple hair sounds fun. My change to green was only recently, after having my hair red and orange for absolute ages (more than 2 years). Before that it was a light blue, but I found that the cold color just washed me out too much. I was looking a bit like a blue haired, freckly zombie. (Thank fuck for my job being non-client facing, har har).

Now, those jaquard boots... I can feel me carefully selected capsule wardrobe going to hell. Hell, I can't even wear heels due to a knackered knee. But still...

I think one woman's polished and expensive, is another woman's Footballers' Wives.

NotARegularPenguin · 22/06/2018 12:38

This is today's work outfit. Marvel vans and a floral shirt dress. Piercings and slightly purple hair.

Great analogy there, TumbleTussocks

Oops sorry, I missed the bit where you said working. I'm a student so never polished Grin
I had oil slick hair till a few weeks ago. Navy, purple and teal on dark brown hair. I like the sound of your green hair. Green dip dye is on my list.

What do you think of this look for work? I have a thing for quirky shirts.

I think the look is spot on (pun intended) Grin I wouldn't go for the faux-innocent trainee facial expression, though.

Here are two pics of my green dip dye attempt for your viewing pleasure (not sure if the scibbles on my face help me protect my identity, seeing as the hair is quite outing, but hey ho)

Got the Vans last week from Schu, just said Marvel Vans I think.

AKingdomForACarrotstick · 22/06/2018 21:36

Herald will you please stop posting links to georgeous things? You're endagering my bank balance. And after browsing endlessly on the Vivien of Holloway site, I'm gutted that I'm the total opposite of those models. From behind I'd look like a 12 year old boy, if it wasn't for the long hair. Do you own anything from the website? Would it look ok-ish without that hourglass body shape, you reckon?

Halo

Me too. I'm a petite, tomboyish sort. I would swerve the dresses because I think they'd make me look like I was trying to play dress up. But I like the separates, especially the high waisted shorts and those trousers, and would mix and match those to get a look to fit my frame, iyswim.

Akingdom great hair! I like your top too. Where is it from?

KittyB52 · 23/06/2018 19:06

I have no aspirations to look polished, as I suspect it takes far more time, money and effort than I will ever possess. I am considering colourful hair now that I am SAHM/home worker. I quite like the two tone effect when the underneath hair is coloured brightly so it’s hidden. I am being put off as I suspect it requires bleaching and other effort.

I don’t often need to go out and meet people, but when I do, I’d like to have some sort of workwear.

AKingdomForACarrotstick · 25/06/2018 10:31

Todo the top is the upper half of a plain, old H&M dress!
