Self harm scar on arm

Well it was all such a blur was having a breakdown and out came a razor ... now I have ugly slugs of scars on my arm and it's kind of obvious it's not from an operation ... so we get sunny weather and I have to cover up 3/4 sleeve or a thin cardy.... any other suggestion I feel makeup draws attention and I sweat like a pig anyway ... shouldn't have done it but unfortunately I was in a dark place and it was a cry for help xxxxxx

I have a few friends with obvious self harm scars. I’ve never really felt the need to ask, they are reasonably self-explanatory. I just sometimes reflect how people develop, they are strong confident women I admire now and I didn’t know them then but they have clearly come out the outside of a rough journey and are great to know. We all have our dark patches, secrets or multiple layers and I have respect for them that they are now confident enough not to care they show their scars, and I feel happy for them that they’ve clearly found a happier space. Definitely no negativity or judging has ever crossed my mind.

cricketmum84 I love love love the description of your tattoo!!!

I’m another one with scars, one 3 inch long big one from having 11 stitches which is very visible and a thousand white lines alongside it. To me I just see them as a part of me, a part of my history and who I am, and what I overcame. I don’t hide them. If anyone judges me they can fuck off. I’m proud of what I have survived.

Best wishes to you.

I have a half sleeve on one arm and a full sleeve on the other so they cover my scars pretty well unless you're really looking for them. (I didn't get the tattoos specifically to cover the scars but they certainly helped)

The only ones that are visible are the ones on my chest but I never walk around top less so there's no issue there..

You shouldn't really care what other people think, it is nothing to do with them but I fully understand why you'd be keen to hide them

cricketmum84 · 25/06/2018 13:16

@PharrellsEagleTattoo this is mine, only had it a week so still healing.

@cricketmum84 that is seriously one of the best tattoos I’ve ever seen. Gorgeous. I’ve been thinking about getting something with pretty much the same meaning as you- about freedom and moving on. I already have four small-ish ones but nothing that gives that message, which is really important to remind myself of.

cricketmum84 · 25/06/2018 15:24

Ah thanks @PharrellsEagleTattoo I am in love with it. It looks so much better than I even imagined. He was one seriously talented tattoo artist!

NT53NJT · 25/06/2018 15:33

Oh snap didn't know you could attach pictures 😂 here's mine which cover an arm full of scars

cricketmum84 · 25/06/2018 19:04

@NT53NJT oh wow! Those poppies are stunning! I have my next couple planned but don't know if I could be brave enough for the full sleeve. I want an owl for the centre of my back. A red rose for right shoulder and a long stemmed watercolour rose for right forearm. Tattoos are so addictive!

NT53NJT · 25/06/2018 19:17

Thanks. Shoulder is an absolute killer so is the wrist and tricep area 😂

Sassysarahh · 25/06/2018 22:41

Looks fair deep that. If you wanna get a tattoo to hide it maybe think about incorporating it into the tattoo

Herja · 25/06/2018 23:05

The one on the far left. If you run your finger long it, squashing it, does it feel like thers fluid moving in it? Or almost inflating more on one side, if you're pressing down the other? It really oes look quite raised for how old it is and very reminiscent of mine that later explode.

JaceLancs · 25/06/2018 23:16

Not caring if this outs me
Our scars are who we are
For those who love a tattoo go for it
I never cover up and stick to simple explanations if anyone asks
Much love to all of you

This is the one that exploded 10 years on. It was similar to yours to begin with, they really will get so much better in time.

In the meantime, hold your head high and wear whatever you want. It was hot today, so I wore a sleeveless dress. Not a fuck was given by me, or anyone else. I have I suspect thousands of scars, many just look like odd textured skin where they're so layered; they're not going anywhere, so all I can do is be confident. I've honestly only ever had a handful of comments (and most of them from my ex who I just ignore).

I’ve been contemplating a botanical tattoo for years of forget-me-nots and Rosemary to trail down the inside of my upper arm toncover the most visible scars

DeliveredByKiki · 25/06/2018 23:28

Also mine are still raised tho not red, and they’re 17yrs old

Like an idiot I picked at them

NT53NJT · 25/06/2018 23:34

I hope everyone has managed to come through the other side and never return back there. Actually made me sad reading/seeing other people's struggles

MummySparkle · 25/06/2018 23:55

My arm is a minefiled, the scars were deep and have messed with the fat underneath. It looks a bit like a wrapped up pork chop. They're all faded now and amazingly my arm does still tan. I get asked about them a lot, I go for 'they're scars from when I was younger'. That usually shuts people up.

I've got 2 new ones on my shoulder from a few weeks ago after over 2 years of being SH free. I can't wear vest tops this summer, but a short sleeve tshirt covers them. Seeing all of yours I think a tattoo to cover them might work. Obviously I'll have to wait a while until they've healed and faded.

I've had a few scars that have 'popped' long after they've healed. Not a big access but clear fluid beneath the top layer of scar. They flattened once that went and stopped itching

DeliveredByKiki · 26/06/2018 11:10

So sorry MummySparkle hope you’re not bearing yourself up too much after the last SH.

I’ve only done it a handful of times since doing it regularly as a teen but that feeling of remorse and regret afterwards sucks as an adult
