Sun hat for a mid 50s man that doesn't make him look like a twat...

Dh is mid 50s and getting thin on top. He needs a hat for the summer hols. Not a baseball cap.

He wants it to keep his head from burning but still cool. He's tall and slim.

He's a t-shirt and shorts with either flip flops or socks and trainers type of guy (i.e. not particularly smart or stylish!).

He does a lot of outdoors stuff and has these floppy style outdoorsy type hats usually. I'm hoping to find something a bit less twatty for the hols where I actually have to be seen with him rather than him wearing it up some mountain without me there.

No help sorry, but if you find one, let me know. I have a very similar husband in need of one.

WaxOnFeckOff · 03/06/2018 17:53

Will do Why there must be something out there...

My husband has a khaki Tilley hat www.tilley.com/uk_en/men/hats/snap-up-brim.html I think it is the wanderer. It is super practical for sun and rain and general outdorsiness. It might be a bit crocodile Dundee but I really like him in it

SavoyCabbage · 03/06/2018 19:15

A straw trilby?

SavoyCabbage · 03/06/2018 19:16

Mind you, my dh wears an akubra, like Crocodile Dundee...

Laska5772 · 03/06/2018 19:19

Mine has a Tilley hat also ,the medium brim

I also have a womens tilley hat! They are great... last forever

Lidlfix · 03/06/2018 19:23

If IDH puts a cap on he looks like I have escorted him out. GrinBut his once blond, now salt and pepper hair leaves his wee scalp so exposed that a hat is an essential. We usually buy a Panama hat on day one of holiday in s resort shop, as plain as possible maybe just a black band. We usually pay the equivalent of a tenner.

His dress code sounds very similar to Wax DH with some floral shorts and Superdry for DD humiliation . He looks eh "jaunty" in his Panama before we embark on sunglasses... The joys of a round face with high cheekbones Confused

WaxOnFeckOff · 03/06/2018 19:44

Thanks everyone, he has quite a small head (and huge feet) so most hats tend to look like a pencil topper.

or a bit like this:

I'll show him those ideas but i'm not sure they are quite "him".

Ahh, DH is looking for a sunhat (we're going to Turkey so mega hot)
He's more ebay/Amazon but the Tilley hat looks like the one he's planning (no baseball caps here either)

What about scalp protector? There will be some in the Sun Protection aisle ? As an add-on not instead of

WaxOnFeckOff · 03/06/2018 19:49

thanks 70, yes will need that too for when swimming.

Tilleys are great.

Grasslands · 03/06/2018 19:54

My dh has one from Orvis, loads of styles and sizes

WindyWednesday · 03/06/2018 19:55

I’m in this position too, floppy hat is wore in a resting on head manner, looks like a gnome. There must be something .

Grasslands · 03/06/2018 19:55

NotMeNoNo · 03/06/2018 19:57

DH wears a leather bushman hat. He works outdoors in the summer so essential really.

TyneTeas · 03/06/2018 20:01

I also came through to suggest a Tilly

FlaviaAlbia · 03/06/2018 20:04

Mine has a Tilly too. They do different hat sizes so if he wanted one he should try to go somewhere to get it fitted. He might be surprised at how different it would be from one he'd pick.

goose1964 · 03/06/2018 20:57

Mine lives in a wide brimmed cricket club hat, please find something else 😂

A straw trilby looks good on a lot of men , I also own a Tilley hat but it looks a bit hiking in the mountains rather than resting on a beach

WaxOnFeckOff · 03/06/2018 21:14

Thanks everyone, i think the tilly/straw trilby etc would all look smart with a nice linen shirt/polo shirt with chino shorts and boat shoes style.

DH will be in walking shorts for smart (with a plain t-shirt) and swimming/gym shorts (with a plain t-shirt) for casual. Footwear will vary from trainers with white sport socks to flip flops to birkenstocks depending on how far he has to walk. He likes being abroad as he can swim in swimming trunks and just pretends to be German...Hmm Grin He mainly wears something like this: www.amazon.co.uk/EINSKEY-Protection-Packable-Waterproof-Fishing/dp/B01J1GQ1II/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=walking+hats&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1528056706&sr=8-2

Maybe I just need to limit how much time we spend together. :)

DS2 has hair halfway down his back which he wont get cut despite te fact he will be roasting, but at least that will cut down on suncream for his neck and ears.

My DH has always refused to wear any sort of hat with a brim due to expat in Provence twatish connotations and swore he would never wear a baseball cap either, but last year, in Greece, he surrendered (thinning hair, strong sunshine) to a baseball cap as the best of a bad lot Get a cap that fits, not too small so sitting too high in his head and in some sort faded khaki or grey cotton/denim, it's the most unobtrusive option. He rather likes it now Smile

WaxOnFeckOff · 03/06/2018 21:39

he has quite a small head so it's usually the opposite problem I think a baseball type cap but in a more "grown up design" would be a decent option, but not sure he'll go for it.

PhilODox · 03/06/2018 21:59

DH has one from M&S that is exactly like the tilley hats....but I hate it! Looks like something a 60yo cricket fan would wear Blush
The one on orvis, linked to, was nicer. He is not a baseball cap chap!

LynetteScavo · 03/06/2018 22:54

He needs a panama.

He needs a panama.

PhilODox · 03/06/2018 23:12

Ooh dear- I think MN may be broken-down I can see Lynette's suggestion in my Threads I'm On... but it doesn't appear here on the thread! Confused

A Panama would make him look identical to the man from delmonte, so that's not a good idea for mine Grin
