Favourite item of clothing EVER!

Who fancies a thread of beautiful things ... what's your favourite item (or items) of clothing EVER? (Not jewellery, accessories or your wedding dress) I'll start .... pictures optional!
A cue (Australian label) jacket, think proper pengin jacket with tails. It's black, it looks great formal or dressed down with kicks and a tee. I've had it for years, at the time I wasn't impressed by the price, but it's been a great investment.
Anyone care to share ?

I still remember fondly a pair of orange flowery pyjamas in a very light cotton I had in the late 60s/early 70s. They were M&S hand me downs from our rich cousins and about the poshest things I had ever owned. I wore them for years until they eventually fell apart.

My mum's embroidered cheesecloth maxi dress that she bought whilst travelling in India in the late sixties. It is a 100% hippy relic. It's too fragile to be worn now but it is beyond fabulous.

My Chanel 2:55

My wedding guest outfit. It's a dark green silk dress and jacket from the early sixties and I lool/feel like a combination of Audrey Hepburn and Jackie O in it.

Great idea for a thread - can I have 2?

The first is a cautionary tale: an original 1920s fully beaded dress that I bought in the early 90s. It cost me £200 - I did not have that kind of cash to spare in those days and probably had to eat back copies of Vogue until pay day. But I was happy. It was a piece of wearable art, I thought and just needed a fitting occasion to show it off to the world.

You can probably guess the rest.... the occasion never happened. Or it did but I was always worried about spilling my drink down it or tearing it or overshadowing the bride etc etc. So I never wore it. Not once. And now it's too late. Oh yes it is, don't bullshit me - the last time I tried it on I looked like of of the great aunts in The Forsyte Saga.

Never, ever save for best.

The second is a 1940s tailored suit I bought at a jumble sale in the 70s. (I know, those were the days). I can no longer get the skirt past my arse but the jacket actually fits and looks better than it did when I was 20 with no boobs or shoulders. I won't pretend I've worn it solidly for 40 years - it's had long spells in the back of the cupboard - but it always makes a comeback and last winter I was wearing it 2 or 3 times a week.

Linen maxi dress I bought in a second hand shop in Paris as a teenager. Oatmeal colour. I love it. And only ten euro!

Céline box classic in dusky pink

Stella M green coat

Maison Margiela peacoat

Probably my Zara black leather jacket. I wear it all the time with everything. Plus it has pockets which is fab as I don't do handbags!

Second would be an Emperio Armani suit I treated myself to when I got my second job - it had a fabulous long line jacket, short skirt and I bought trousers too. It was beautiful and worth every penny. I still have the jacket!

OCSock · 31/05/2018 20:09

My favourite garment was a pair of black trousers I bought across the road from my office at Madison and 56th St in NY, bias cut and secured only by buttons (one set at low waist height, the second on the hips) in a black doeskin wool. I wore them until they wore to shreds, then asked a tailor to copy exactly, but they were only ever just passable. Never were there more perfectly flattering trousers. I still mourn them.

guffaux · 31/05/2018 23:11

a black, fitted, 'cat suit' (as they were called then - 70's ) zip up the middle, clingy in aaalll the right places, and I was skinny and body-confident and totally rocked it, despite my otherwise odd appearance - happy days, but too too brief Smile

latterly, I have a black skater dress, with opaques and brogues, with a black fitted coat, that looks great for most occasions, (not so much for weddings tho lol)

and a pair of black cigarette trousers, black silk camisole, and black sequin blazer, with snakeskin t-bar heels, and i feel fab (not sure how i look to others but who cares!)

Hard to choose, but I'd say my favourite is the outfit that I wore most of the winter, a black top with long flared sleeves and a high ruffled collar, long black gypsy skirt, black pointy toed ankle boots, with a green silk scarf and a green ribbon sash, and black velvet fingerless gloves with little buttons. I feel awesome in that outfit.

LanguidLobster · 01/06/2018 01:27

I really had to think about that but a blue scarf my dad bought in venice and posted to me when I was in china.

Or else what I bought myself a cream alberta ferreti coat.

Thebluedog · 01/06/2018 04:00

Clark’s Orinoco boots. I’ve had 3 pairs now and love them. I’ve had to resort to eBay to buy them now as they don’t make them anymore.

Favourite item of clothing EVER!
Skittlesandbeer · 01/06/2018 05:13

Easy for me. My (australian) Camilla Franks flowing kaftans. 100% silk, ankle length, bright designs. Bought 3 over 5 years, a decade ago (when I was a high earner!). I really do live in them in summer and on holidays. I machine wash them, they dry in 6 mins. Never ironed (just hang in a steamy shower room).

I’ve even been known to sleep in them, wear all day at the beach, then add dangly earrings and go out that night.

Wore them through the hot months of my pregnancy, then breastfeeding, then weight gain, then weight loss. Always felt like a proper Goddess in them! My DD says she knows it’s properly summertime when I break out my moo moo.

Now that’s a lot for a piece of clothing to do for you! They were bloody expensive to buy (even on eBay) but I think I’m probably down to pence-per-wear by now. It will be so sad when they fall to bits...

Mercurial123 · 01/06/2018 06:52

a white drop waist dress with semi pleated skirt and an enormous scarf/belt It must have been around 1983 and I bought it in London at a shop for upcoming designers . God knows what happened to it, it could even be in my wardrobes somewhere

Bugjune · 01/06/2018 08:50

Balenciaga leather jacket bought in 2010 and still feel amazing every single time I wear it. In terms of cost per wear it's practically free. Hmm

Favourite item of clothing EVER!
Deecee1012 · 01/06/2018 09:39

When expecting my son, money was tight so I 'appropriated' a couple of my dad's shirts to wear over maternity trousers. Being a scruff at heart...I still have one I wear and although my Dad isn't with me any more, wearing it just feels like a hug.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/06/2018 09:56

I used to have a black denim flared mini skirt, that was made out of panels of fabric. It was aged 13, from Tammy Girl, and I wore it until after having dd2 when I was 28. It was great in summer with bare legs and sandals, and also in winter with opaques and DMs.

Now, it's my black leather jacket. It's only a cheap one, from Oasis, but I instantly feel like 'me' when I put it on.

I'd also say my Vivienne Westwood Red Label skirt, but I am currently too fat for it. :(

LanguidLobster · 01/06/2018 11:42

Skittles looked up the kaftans, never heard of then before. I'm more of a pencil skirt/wool jumper person but they look really colourful and floaty

CountFosco · 01/06/2018 13:22

When I was a student circa 1995 I bought a size 10 prussian blue suede A-line miniskirt from TopShop which barely skimmed my arse. I wore with a tiny black t-shirt, opaques and DMs. I felt amazing in it. I only got rid of it because I got too fat for it in my 30s. Wish I had kept it.

fishonabicycle · 01/06/2018 13:40

Black stretchy velvet catsuit. Silver zip up the front. Wore it with with stompy boots so much - probably around 1990? I think it eventually faded to grey and was consigned to history. I would wear it now if I still had it. Loved it so so much.

PussGirl · 01/06/2018 14:03

A black denim mini skirt circa 1986 from somewhere like River Island or Warehouse or Dorothy Perkins - I keep dyeing it when it fades Smile

A gorgeous bottle-green velvet evening jacket from Monsoon with deep lapels & huge turned-back cuffs, from the early 90s. I used to keep it for best but wear it quite a lot now Smile

A black leather waistcoat bought from an offer in She magazine years ago Smile

Recent favourite purchases include three pairs of patterned harem pants Grin
