What to wear for my new job?

Hi everyone I need some advice I'm starting a new job as a special needs teaching assistant and don't have a clue what to wear. It will be working with disabled children so needs to be durable but smart. My current work clothes are very office like and not really things to move about in.

So if anyone has any ideas what a short ass size 16 person on a very tight budget should wear for this new job it would be so helpful. I have one day to go shopping on my own so not much time.

Culottes and a nice blouse? Khakis and shirts?

mimibunz · 26/05/2018 13:36

Black capris with some stretch in them.

I’m a special needs teacher and wear jeans/shorts and t shirts. Smart is definitely not a consideration as you’re potentially going to have some sort of messy encounter daily be it food, paint, glitter etc

Definitely stretch trousers.
Flat shoes that stay on your feet.
Tops that don't show a cleavage when you bend over.

Is it a school setting OP? Mainstream or special school?

Donthugmeimscared · 26/05/2018 13:48

It's a special school.

Yeah, in this context 'smart' means 'won't show your boobs, bum or genitals in the course of the day'. Ime special schools tend to be less formal in this type of thing than mainstream schools, although I guess it could be an exception.

Anything you wear could end up with glitter/paint/mud/food/bodily fluids on, so save clothes you care about for your free time.

Thank you I did end up having paint all up my arm from the trial I had before my interview. On the plus side I think it showed I was willing to get stuck in. It's just a bit daunting as it's such a jump from my current job.

All have a uniform of dark polo shirt , dark hoodie , dark waterproof jacket and almost everyone wears jogger type bottoms and dark trainers .

  • Where I work we all etc ....

From what I remember there where lots of long tops with leggings but I was really nervous so didn't take in to much.

See if there's any staff on a web site/Facebook page

SpeckledyHen · 26/05/2018 21:45

Please don't stress over it - the most important thing is how you care for the young people . Maybe drop an email to them to ask for some guidence if you can't see something on their website or social media ?
All the best in your new role .
