Holiday clothing for a short slightly overweight 50 something lady

I lurk on here and see how helpful you ladies are. I'm going away in the summer for a few days and always struggle buying clothes. I'm 5 foot and size 12. Bit of a tummy, hips and thighs and not small-breasted. How on earth can I look stylish (maybe even glamorous?) and be cool and comfortable? Is this even possible at my age and given my height/weight? Where should I shop? My normal casual (non-holiday) wear is skinny jeans/leggings and tunic tops (although some of these accentuate my tummy). I wear wedges to give me a bit of height usually. Any help/advice would be appreciated.

I'm 43 and exactly the same height and size . I'm an hourglass shape though . Later I'll link to a few things I've bought recently .

This to wear over a vest with jeans or shorts .

Thanks @pigpoglet The Matalan and H & M dresses look quite nice (although not my usual style). Not sure I'd carry off a kimono. I think the cobalt dress might be a bit revealing for a lady of my age :-) Can I ask where the shorts are from? Thanks for the ideas.

Fair enough , it's going to hot where I'm going so need air on me 😂.. the shorts are h and m and come in lots of colours .

Hi @pigpoglet I looked at the Matalan maxi dress today and just thought it would swamp me. Do you find you can wear maxi dresses being short? I did buy a knee length dress in TK Maxx. Not 100 % sure about it so still looking for things.

No it's fine , its more above ankle length on me but I like it like that .

pigpoglet · 26/05/2018 05:43

I never really let my height stop me wearing things , I could do with being a stone or two lighter but I'm not so I just try to look nice instead . Max is actually elongate me especially when they are straight like the Matalan one .

I'm a way at the moment and I bought a pair of black trousers from new look that have been an absolute godsend. They are a thin material with an elasticated waist...really comfy and I've worn both with heels and with flat sandals (just rolled up a couple of times)...story I don't have the link...but I'm also short and slightly overweight and they hang really well and don't crease at all.

fedupandnogin · 26/05/2018 06:28

Thanks @Itsallpropaganda Wow I never even go in New Look - I always think I'm at least 30 years too old to go in there. Maybe I'm wrong?!

I have had some bargains from there...their sandals are pretty good too! I also had a couple of lightweight wrap style tops!

How hot will it be where you’re going? Will you be on the beach, citybreak, country? Any activity like walking for ages, or mainly relaxing?

I would set a budget, decide what items you need, head for places within budget and try loads and loads on.

I like a floaty skirt, fitted low neck tops, with thin cardi or denim jacket for evening.

Accessories can be cheap but look good. I would love to splurge on posh sunglasses though!

fedupandnogin · 26/05/2018 08:02

I'm going to the Med in July so will be hot. Will be doing some beach, some shopping/sightseeing, a bit of walking. I actually hate shopping for clothes as I try loads on and get depressed that nothing seems to look right. I have actually just bought myself some new sunglasses (hopefully they'll help me look a little bit glam :-) )

I’ve just bought a couple of dresses from M&S in linen for my Mallorca holiday. They’re both stripy - one is a handkerchief hem and the other is a straight tunic style dress with a tie belt. I’m small and size 14 and these are cool and flattering. Other than dresses I tend to wear culottes instead of shorts. M&S linen wide cropped trousers are a flattering shape or Crocus culottes from Jigsaw are also easy to wear.Teamed with linen t shirts from H&M.If you’re doing lots of walking I swear by Fitflops 😊.
However buying glamorous sunglasses that make you feel good is a good start.

I'm 5'4 and a 16 apple. There's a lot of lovely midi length dresses in the shops just now which I prefer due to my height. Also Matalan have cropped straight cotton trousers in nice colours.

Loonoon · 26/05/2018 16:12

I am possibly your long lost twin OP, similar height, build and age. I have these in loads of colours and wear them with skinny cropped jeans or Jeggings. The silk makes them look simultaneously casual and dressy.
