My hair has turned straw like when it’s wet. Help me.

My once glossy hair is getting courser and drier since I became peri menopausal.
It’s just past shoulder length and getting grey. I do dye it occasionally to hide the grey as my hair is very dark.
I’d love to go lighter to hide the grey but I’m half Indian so I’d look daft.

I have really noticed how dry and frizzy and course it’s become.

What can I buy to make it better.
Not coconut oil. That makes it worse.

Aussie 3 minute miracle!

theredjellybean · 22/05/2018 13:47

Absolutely have same problem.
I stripped back products, now use Philip Kingsley elastacizer shampoo and conditioner. And a tiny amount of luxor hair oil on ends.
Blow dry on cool with Dyson hairdryer.
It's not great but better than has been.
I am starting hrt in hope it helps

I am using Aussie leave in conditioner spray just to get the comb through when its wet. I did have some small Phillip Kingsley elastacizers that came in advent calendars but its too expensive to buy full price. I do like the product though.

what I get needs to be more affordable.

I have the keratin treatment done every 3 months but it’s expensive - £130ish - but I don’t have to buy any product so overall probably not that much different! It smooths hair out and I rarely need to even use a brush, I just blow dry it and it falls into place

I coconut oil mask really softened up my hair when I had it bleached. It is back to normal colour (brown) now but I still cover my grey.

Melt some generic coconut oil in the microwave and just slap it all over hair. I leave mine for a couple of hours under a shower cap and two shampoos in the same shower afterwards gets the grease out and it is so soft.

I also use a leave in conditioner after each wash and some oil on the ends while my hair is still wet.

PK elasticizer

RedKen Extreme Anti-Snap

Are my two suggestions.

ihatethecold · 22/05/2018 22:06

Thanks

Another vote for the redken extreme anti snap. Or any type of protein shampoo & conditioner. I use a bit of argan oil on the ends if they're very dry too.

starsandstuff · 22/05/2018 22:48

You might not consider this advice do feel free to ignore! But when I let my grey come in my hair actually became much softer and tons better condition. It never occurred to me that the dye itself was drying out my hair but I think it was. Just another option.

MollyHuaCha · 22/05/2018 23:04

Lots of conditioner.

And maybe avoid swimming pools water?

ihatethecold · 23/05/2018 11:45

I don’t go swimming so chlorine isn’t an issue.
I’m not ready to go grey yet but I’m sure hair dye will dry it out.

You need to figure out if it's moisture or protein that your hair needs - too much protein can make hair brittle.

I swear by Bleach London Reincarnation Mask and Hair Elixir (the latter is avocado oil) for my heavily bleached hair. For moisture I love Pureology products.

ihatethecold · 23/05/2018 13:24

How do I work that out Doctor?

The only thing that properly moisturises my hair (also straw like) is

loreal paris elvive colour protect low shampoo

bzzbeebzz · 23/05/2018 13:54

And Neils yard argan oil - fab for face and hair
