Curlies - what’s the difference between no sulphate and low-poo?

If you follow the curly girl method, you’re supposed to not use sulphate shampoo. But some people seem to talk about sulfate-free shampoos and low-poo shampoo - aren’t they both the same thing? And if not, are you supposed to alternate between both....?

As an aside, the curly girl method does my bloody head in. Lots of people clearly get great results but it’s so complicated! And what I don’t understand is, why when I was a kid/teenager could I use any old shampoo, products etc and load my hair up with silicones yet it was bouncy, voluminous and ringlet-y - but now I need a 17 step routine to achieve curls that last an hour at best???!!

I think it's the same thing , I just wash my hair in cantu conditioner and use a curl creme then diffuse it . Not that tricky to be honest . If I have time I will wrap it in a microfibre towel before hand as that gives a better curl but it's not essential .

Do you ever use shampoo? Does only washing with conditioner leave you with greasy hair at all?

Yes every few washes I do but my hair curls with any shampoo . I think the curly girl was more aimed at people with light curl to enhance it . My hair is never greasy though even after a week .
Maybe get some cantu products and just try washing with them as they are sulphate free .

I have very fine curly hair and washing with just conditioner would leave it lank. I wash (shampoo & conditioner) my hair daily and use a low-poo shampoo (boucleme hydrating hair cleanser - blue bottle). As always, what suits one type of curls doesn’t another. I have to wash my hair every morning as sleeping on it completely destroys the curls, yet I have friends who just wash with conditioner (co-wash) event few days.

As I understand it (and I might be wrong), sulfate-free shampoo doesn’t have to mean low poo, but usually does. Sulfates are what makes (most) shampoo lather up.

What type of hair do you have choc? Following the curly girl method to the letter doesn’t work for everyone (me included).

My hair sounds like yours Ypsilanti. It gets weighed down easily. If I sleep on it, the curls drop. They will revive with a spray of water but will drop and my hair will look dry and later in the day, a bit greasy.

I tried scrunching in cantu custard in the shower the other day. It made my hair really curly but when I “scrunched out the crunch” (couldn’t leave as is because it looked wet and 90s style crunchy) the curls really dropped.
