Is there anything that actually works for preventing or treating those massive hormonal spots you get before your period?

After a year of excellent, flawless skin while breastfeeding, I've now stopped breastfeeding completely and my skin is a mess.

Every month in the middle of my cycle I get one of those horrid, red, painful cyst-type spots, usually on my chin or by my nose. It takes the whole of the rest of my cycle to fuck off, then I get about a week of okay skin before the next one appears.

I'm so, so fucked off with them. I'm not on hormonal contraception, nor do I want to be. I religiously do a skincare routine with Avene products but I haven't really noticed any difference.

What works????

I'm not sure if this is helpful as it's not an immediate fix, but I take Evening Primrose and Starflower Oil daily (1000mg) to balance my crazy hormones. It takes a few months to notice th difference but oh my what a difference to your skin. Before , I too would get the bastard spots you describe. Really hard, painful, nothing to squeeze out and always really noticeable. Now, I only get such eruptions if I miss a week or so of SO and/or EPO.

soyakatteforme do you need to take both? I'm 50 and still get hormonal spots every month. Really pisses me off. Sorry OP not to be of much help. I plonk in some Elemis spot treatment which is as good as anything I've used in the past but not magic.

It’s not a total cure, but I find that Elemis cleansing balm helps me. It doesn’t dry, at all, which seems to make my skin less greasy.

I took Agnus Castus for about six months after stopping breastfeeding and have been better this time. Better skin and less PMT. was horrific with first two DC.

Evening Primrose oil for me too. 1000mg a day.

I found acid toners - I use NIP+FAB, but I'm sure others work as well - faded the marks they left.

IHeartKingThistle · 18/05/2018 19:24

The Clean and clear gel in the little purple tube is great at getting rid of those.

norbert23 · 18/05/2018 19:28

I started to take a high dose vitamin b complex which seems to have balanced all my hormones out within a very short space of time Smile I use viridian high 5 and it's fab. I still haven't really found anything that works to put directly on skin but the Sunday Riley toner (green, forgot the name) is pretty good. I miss my amazing bf skin!

Soyalatteforme · 18/05/2018 19:28

Good question only. Not sure. Only ever taken both. In absence of either for a few days I seem to get a return of the spots.

Odiepants · 18/05/2018 20:19

I found evening promise oil made my hormonal spots even worse unfortunately. One month I had 2 enormous spot horns in the middle of my forehead!

RandomWordsStuckTogether · 18/05/2018 20:49

SO glad I started this thread. I used to take EPO and SFO back in the mists of time and had completely forgotten they existed tbh. Definitely a good place to start. These zits are so obviously hormonal, tackling the hormones first seems obvious!

Definitely EPO, helps manage those big chin spots and stops my boob being sore!

Serial123 · 18/05/2018 21:38

Not a prevention, but I find Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream good to put on big, painful spots.

MIdgebabe · 18/05/2018 21:43

Stops sore boobs?!?....thank you ...I'll be at the chemists tomorrow. Thank you.

OlennasWimple · 19/05/2018 00:02

If you decide to go down the medical route, spirolactanone has done wonders for me. Mostly stops the spots coming up, but on the odd occasion that one does it only lasts a day rather than simmering below the surface for two weeks like before
