Help - flattering dress for tall (6ft) larger (size 22) lady

We have been invited to a summer evening party and I am looking for a nice dress to wear. I am not normally a dress person but I would like to wear a dress as it sounds like a dressy up affair. It would need to be flattering, comfortable and cool to wear as I am perimenopause or menopausal.
In terms of the length I would consider just covering my knees, midi or maxi and in terms of colour I have reddish hair blue eyes and freckles and I quite like bright colours ideally would prefer not black or navy as I wear it a lot at work.
Any suggestions of dresses or retailers would be very much appreciated. I have tried long tall Sally but they all seem to be figure hugging (my tummy is my worst area), too casual or to officey.

Yours clothing have some lovely dresses! They are very generous in size. They are online if there isn't a store near you.

Monsoon are definitely worth a look. I've got a few nice maxis from QVC.

sugarbum · 08/05/2018 12:17

This is one of my fave S&Js :www.scarlettandjo.com/collections/juliette-hanky-hem-dresses/products/juliette-hanky-hem-dress-3?variant=76285018116

The model is 5 ft 9 and its quite long on her.

Hellsbellscockleshells · 08/05/2018 12:59

Thanks all the trouble with YOURS and Scarlett and Jo is the waist is far too high/short for me as I am 6ft which emphasises my tummy even more :-(
I have had success with Monsoon in the past so i’ll try there, not tried QVC yet but will have a look.

Did you see Long talL Sally’s stuff that’s brand new in?

I absolutely love the cornflower blue colour of that dress @ScattyCharly thanks I had seen it loved the colour but dismissed it as I thought my arms might be too cold, too exposed and I was worried about it being too fitted for my tummy. But running out of options I have now ordered it in a 22 as a contender as well as the red maxi dress with 5 star reviews although I would wear an ivory pashmina, a fake tan, some shapewear and confidence with either. Thanks 🤞 x

Have you looked at Boden dresses? They go up to 22 and have a long length and some midi styles. Have quite a few dressier dresses at the moment for summer ‘dos’.

Hellsbellscockleshells · 08/05/2018 20:31

I really like the first and last dress but the first only goes up to size 14 and the last one only goes up to a size 18.

It will also be quiet a posh affair so I would like to feel good. I did spot a lovely bright green dress with studio 8 but the 22 is sold out and although the model is 5’11’ it doesn’t quite cover her knees. I am trying to tone up and loose weight but have a couple of health conditions and getting very far, so far.

Well I tried the lovely blue LTS a dress and it’s not flattering as I have a massive tummy also tried red and white maxi from LTS it has too much material and looks completely unflattering in a size 22 and nothing like it looks on the thick thin model online and in the catalogue any further suggestions please? It needs to be knee length or below on someone 6ft come in a size 22 in a bright colour and hide or minimise my massive stomach?

I haven't tried them so can't really vouch for it, but I keep seeing this pop up in ads and I think it's just gorgeous. This retailer have a whole collection that goes up to I think a 32, and lots of it is really lovely.

blueskyinmarch · 17/05/2018 22:23

What about a maxi dress? Simply Be have loads of nice dresses.

Hellsbellscockleshells · 17/05/2018 23:09

Swearwolf Do you have a link please? SimplyBe tends to be wide but not very long also nearly everything is thick polyester which as a woman of a certain age I am warm frequently and don’t want to feel
Any warmer.

I tried STUDIO 8 Phase 8’s plus size range where most of the models seem to be 5’11 but the brighter colours I like all look to be above the knee and exaggerating my tummy or the maxi’s seem to be black or are often referred to as bridesmaids dresses.

I have successfully taken up a maxi dress to midi length. Worth remembering if you see a maxi you like but want shorter!

IDismyname · 18/05/2018 07:23

I can’t do the link, but try Sahara clothing, or Sahara London. Clothes shop in Guildford that do mail order. They have a lot of stuff in linens... dresses, and separates too.

Some of the dresses could well be what you’re after.

I seem to recall call they do very funky jewellery

bookbook · 18/05/2018 09:10

OP - Have you considered trousers, with a lovely long top/tunic as an alternative?
Or - do you know any dressmakers? I have been recommended these - Colette patterns . HERE - One joy of that, is they can be adjusted to fit perfectly
thank you for the Sahara idea gravytrain - there is a shop near me, so will be going to have a look.

Slightly off topic but why does ASOS think I'm in France.

I think this would be very flattering, though it doesn't meet all criteria: www.houseoffraser.co.uk/women/studio-8-quinn-dress/d789303.pd#258948610

bunbunny · 18/05/2018 14:54

How about this one from Studio 8?
www.studio-eight.com/fcp/product/studio8/shop-all-clothing/felicity-maxi-dress/230388880

dsis bought the Jolene dress from Studio 8 last year (or even the year before) and it was really flattering on her - she's 5 foot ten and same size as you.

She found it very comfy to wear - although it's a jersey fabric it's good quality so didn't get hot and sweaty. It has pink, purple, white and navy shades in it in stripey blotches (I accept that this is probably not the best description to make you want to see it but it's nice, honest!) so she's found that she has worn it a lot since - she can dress it up or brighten it up with white or pink or purple, or make it a bit more everyday with navy.

www.studio-eight.com/fcp/product/studio8/sale-dresses/jolene-maxi-dress/230137000

They seem to have some left in a size 24 on the studio 8 website - (£89 instead of £139) and a few in other sizes in other stores (or maybe even get lucky on ebay)

Hellsbellscockleshells · 18/05/2018 23:53

Swearwolf - the colour and style of that dress would be perfect material may not be cool enough for got me in June lol but I will check dimensions/length.
Ofthread - perfect cotton material
The waist looks very short on the studio 8 dresses which may emphasise my perturbing midriff. Has anyone 6ft with a very big tummy experience of these dresses?
Thanks bunbunny - again the waist looks too high/short with studio 8 dresses. I don’t like the first one with the black top (as black drains me with my auburn hair) also it’s not quite dressy/special enough for the event but the second one might be ok with an Ivory or purple pashmina or something.
Thanks all food for thought.

Any other suggestions I really like the two dresses below the Curvissa dress would maybe be better as it wouldn’t cling as much or emphasise my tummy and non existent waist but would come up embarrassingly short on me and really the Studio 8 dress is sold out in my size but is still a little short.
I love the colours on both dresses.
