Am a 35 year old size 14 with a wardrobe entirely made up of scruffy jeans and boring work outfits. Am having a childfree weekend for the 1st time in aeons next weekend staying with SIL in London. She has just mailed me to say that I must bring some heels and a funky / glammy outfit. Have neither and not much dosh to spend. What should I wear / buy that isn't too expensive but makes me look a bit more special than my tired everyday stuff? Help me oh wise Mumsnetters....

Help me please.... SIL is a successful mediababe, is size 8, 5ft 10 and blonde. I already feel inferior but dear Lord I need a night out!!

whereabouts are you going?

Sparkletastic · 15/05/2007 18:49

She didn't say but I've now emailed (in a mildly panicked tone) to ask for more details. She usually knocks about her private club type gaff in Notting Hill but also does lots of bar hopping and select clubs. I can't hope to compete with her but need to feel like I've tried!!

you have to feel comfortable in what you are wearing, so if glamming up isnt you, then dont

i have only made a proper effort once in god knows how long, and that was for a valentines meal this year, usually i go out in jeans and a t shirt, and i dont get refused entry

if you dont want to go overboard ,just put some heels and accessories with clothes you feel comfortable in

Sparkletastic · 15/05/2007 19:04

Thanks lou33 - am thinking my usual jeans but with something in the way of strappy footwear and a nice top might do the trick.

sounds like more effort than i make, last firday it was olg born combats, a khaki cut off sleeveless t shirt and tennis shoes!

mind you i wasnt going to a private club

i might have ditched the tennis shoes for a private club

I would check with her that smart jeans are okay. If yes I would wear heeld sandals and a going out top - something like this outfit here the grey top one

Sparkletastic · 15/05/2007 19:16

I wish I was less of an insecure mess lou!! Thanks Lucy - do you mean the foil smock one? I do like that but wonder if the colour is a bit dodgy. SIL says jeans fine if with smart top and heels - we are going to 'lounge bars' ooerr...

Wear something you feel comfortable in or you won't have a good night.

Don't do strappy shoes if they're not the norm for you.

Accentuate your best points!

i'm sure you will look great and enjoy yourself

LittleMouseWithCLogsOn · 16/05/2007 08:24

It is deffo lounge bars. I'm not even sure what these are! SIL advises jeans, funky top and strappy shoes or a dress but not massively smart. I'm a fairly average but tall-ish size 14. Not huge boobs or hips or owt but slightly saddle-baggish below the arse. What about one of these maxi dresses?! Or do you need to be a sylph for those?! Or a funky top that hides low-slung butt? And what to do about shoes...
