how do you wash your long thick hair?

My hair is now quite long and it is very thick. I am finding it hard to get the shampoo right in to the back roots bits and wondering if there is a technique that I do not know about. I am wondering whether I should section it somehow to add the shampoo in. I am also using loads of shampoo due to my poor technique.

Am I doing it wrong?

mine isn't really thick as such but i do have an awful lot of it and it's waist length. To wash it properly, i section it like i'm going to put it in pig tails and wash each side, one after the other, same with conditioner after ive rinsed out the shampoo. sounds a bit daft but makes sure i get the back clean as well as the top which just doesn't happen unless i section it out

I put shampoo on the top of my head and then pull up the ends and rub them in the shampoo, works for me
