To not get Cos

goose1964 · 12/04/2018 14:50

I've looked at the website and see how miserable the models look wearing the clothes, but when I was shopping yesterday I went into the shop to have a look at what seemed to be rows of sacks in various format and the highlight was a pink cardi that Dolores Umbridge would have been proud of

I don't "get" those "wiggle" dresses and throw back fancy dress style 40's/50's dresses that are often praised on here but each to their own. I do like Cos a lot.

squoosh · 13/04/2018 14:45

I don't get body con dresses. Even on those blessed with the most toned and lithe figures I just think they're the most unflattering things.

squoosh · 13/04/2018 14:46

Oh yeah, the floral 1950s dresses from Lindybop and the like. No getting of those either.

athingthateveryoneneeds · 13/04/2018 14:47

I found a silk Cos shirt in a charity shop once for £4. I loved it. It was boxy, yes, but it looked fab on. It somehow got ruined in the wash and I still mourn its passing.

rightknockered · 13/04/2018 15:30

I like Cos, Toast and also Whistles. But i like dressing simply and consider Whistles my sort of date dressing Grin.
I don't like River Island, or understand the Warehouse love. Went off French Connection at some point after the 90's.

rightknockered · 13/04/2018 15:31

I also like Allsaints, which gets a lot of hate on MN, don't understand why - the fabrics and cuts are great.

AnnaHindrer · 13/04/2018 15:33

I like Oliver Bonas. Am a new convert and they do t have shed loads of stuff to choose from but they have a lot of great quality stuff in nice styles and you can get them a lot cheaper in their sales.

AnnaHindrer · 13/04/2018 15:35

Not sure about All Saints clothes, I dislike the dark colours but they’re shoes are on point or at least they were last time I bought some.

Hypermice · 13/04/2018 16:20

French connection was amazing in the 90s. Their jackets for women often had (whisper it) inside pockets and their cuts and fabrics were great.

Where else can one find natural fibre, well cut stuff? Any ideas? Has to be online

RainyApril · 13/04/2018 16:23

I suppose the 'don't get it' comments in regards Cos are due to fans raving about the store. That's been my experience anyway. People say how great it is and then you go in, and wonder what all the fuss was about.

Whereas I've never heard anyone raving about any of the other stores criticised upthread - monsoon, river island, next. When talking about those stores I think most people know their limitations. I certainly only ever go in those shops on a desperate needs-must hunt for something.

Mercurial123 · 13/04/2018 16:59

I go into COS and see loads of stuff I like. There's plenty on here I don't get the love for skater dresses, wanting to look French or expensive, why would anyone want to shop in Next or Monsoon full of drab clothes in man made fibres? I'm not offended by people not liking COS I really couldn't care less but the question gets asked all the time.

Peanutbuttercups21 · 13/04/2018 17:19

I quite like Cos and Toast

It is uncompromisingly "unsexy", it is not about dressing for the male gaze.

It is a bit more interesting than that, and cool in a not-trying-to-look-cool way

fiorentina · 13/04/2018 17:54

I love Cos, Other Stories and Kin- a John Lewis similar own brand. Lots of natural fabrics, I always get compliments about outfits from there. Lots of outfits I’ve had to try on to ‘get them’ though.

AlbertaSimmons · 13/04/2018 20:30

I like the look of the Kin stuff in JL, but again, sizing is very iffy.

wowfudge · 13/04/2018 20:50

I love Cos. Whenever we go to Brighton I spend hours in there. You have to try things on though - the sizing varies a bit and what you think something will look like on isn't always the case.

hammeringinmyhead · 14/04/2018 00:28

A lot of it is just "normal" clothes though, no? Like this top. It could be from anywhere although it is no doubt better quality than a supermarket version.

However, I do think some of their dresses are odd for the UK market.

I'm not a fan personally as I need boob room and a bit of a waist plus Cos stuff is a bit long on me so I tend to go to Uniqlo for basics in nice cotton.

Tantpoke · 14/04/2018 00:48

I love the clean lines of Cos.

All the models are quite flat chested and I'm not so their clothes never seem to hang properly on me sadly.

mammmamia · 14/04/2018 01:04

I love Cos. I don’t get Fat Face or Boden.

Thebirthdayparty · 14/04/2018 01:12

This comes over every two months.

What shops do you like OP? There is a good chance that those of us who like Cos might not like what you like either.

Each to their own and all that......but there really isn't any need to lament over it.

NigellasGuest · 14/04/2018 07:13

Cos looks a bit Japanese to me, although I don't think it's even remotely a Japanese company?

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 14/04/2018 08:44

Cos have some really nice designs. I just wish their clothes looked good on me. I’m extremely short and busty and have to conclude that I’m better off going elsewhere. Right now I’m into Gudrun Sjöden. Some of the stuff is too patterny for me, but I like the plainer, simpler pieces.

RainyApril · 14/04/2018 10:27

No I'm not keen on boden, fat face, white stuff. Too many patterns. But I can't always afford the stuff I do like so I sometimes end up trawling them, and others. Occasionally you get a nice surprise. I've never bought clothes from a supermarket but bought jeans in Sainsbury's last week - they were about £15 and I thought they'd be fine around the house. I love them. Have worn them out and received compliments. I suppose it doesn't pay to be snobby or sneery, you can find odd pieces in even the unlikeliest of places.

CountFosco · 14/04/2018 11:06

I got a fantastic cotton maxi skirt with pockets in Sainsburys last year for £10. I love it. Might have to wear it this week if it's going to be warm.

Floisme · 14/04/2018 11:13

I've changed my mind about Cos and I like their clothes now but I still won't be buying much from them until they deign to open a store round here (which is never going to happen) because I find their sizing unfathomable and their website unusable.

I will defend the clothes but let's be honest, it's hardly a mystery why a lot of people don't get them and sniping back about other brands seems a bit unnecessary.

I also like Toast but they're as bad. If fact they're arguably more annoying as they also spin this ethical/quasi spiritual vibe when, as far as I can see, they manufacture in the far East just like the rest of them.

Thebirthdayparty · 14/04/2018 12:41

I don’t think anyone is sniping really just replying in like to the original post.
