I'm going to be the mother of the bride in 5 months time...what the hell do I wear?

DD1 is marrying her beautiful partner (both women) in 5 months time. Beach side wedding in Cornwall. The other mother of the bride is about my age but considerably wealthier, and I haven't worn a dress since... well probably my own wedding 28 years ago!
I do a job which involves trousers and a hi vis jacket, don't wear makeup and really don't want to wear a dress as I will feel so far out of my comfort zone it wouldn't even be funny.

DD2 has suggested maybe a smart 'play suit' type outfit with a nice jacket and low heels...but I can't even picture what she means.. seriously I'm hopeless.

For context I'm 50, 5 ft 7 and 9 stone 8, with chin length hair that has a hell of a lot of grey (went natural colour 2 years ago) I have wondered whether I should have it blonded or something (I was mid brown) but not sure I want to go back to colour.

ANY suggestions welcomed. In theory I COULD wear a dress but I just have no clue about it. I know that actually no one is going to care that much what I wear (the two girls are both very feminine and are in the most beautiful dresses so who's going to look at me?) but I feel ought to try and look nice!

Helllllp!!!

Would dd go shopping with you? Book a personal shopper appointment maybe and make a day of it? Then you could be happy that she's happy iyswim.

Bodear · 04/04/2018 19:08

Hey OP, would you try a personal shopping session at Debenhams/ House of Fraser? They’re really useful for ideas and you’ll get lots of ideas with no obligation to buy.

Dontbuymesocks · 04/04/2018 19:15

What shape are you? Pear, apple etc? You’re obviously slim so that makes it easier. Do you have anything you really want to hide eg legs, arms, bum?

IfYouDontImagineNothingHappens · 04/04/2018 19:20

Go get a personal shopper! You sound like you've got an ideal figure.

Uniglo18 · 04/04/2018 19:34

Try Hairprint to get your hair back to it's original tone. It's none toxic so safe to use.

Personal shopper. Buy expensive but simple, plain and classic/classy.

Don't colour your hair but have it expertly cut and really pamper it.

Wear a piece of exquisite jewellery ( not necessarily expensive, but beautiful)

Enjoy yourself! You have created this amazing woman who is to be married. Be proud of you 💕

My mother would probably be having the same dilemma if it were me. She doesn't do dresses.
A playsuit could look great. Attached some pictures for example. I agree about taking them shopping with you, they will advise and I'm sure they'd want you in something you feel comfy in!

Don’t wear a dress if you’re not comfortable in it. Why don’t you go for a trouser suit with a cami and low heels? A lovely blow dry on your hair would probably look effortless and chic. I much prefer that look than fascinators etc. Especially when you’re usual look is pretty low key by the sound of it. I think this would look more stylish and chic.

I'd definitely recommend a personal shopper, I went to the one at Debenhams for my MOB outfit last year and will go again for another this year. It's great, they know the stock, what suits age, size and body shape, and there's no pressure to buy at all. I was delighted with my outfit, and would never have tried it on otherwise. I'm totally a jeans and boots person, so a dress/hat outfit was out of my comfort zone.

zippyswife · 04/04/2018 20:02

Or one of those cape jackets (are they still fashionable) with trousers cami and heels. Look on Pinterest at styles of people you like.

StillMedusa · 04/04/2018 20:21

Oh thank you! I shall find out about a personal shopper!
Looking at the pics I can see why DD2 suggested a playsuit type outfit..I am reasonably slim (tho the thickening middle aged waist is starting) and don't have a big bust so could probably carry it off. I definitely don't want to darken my hair, my original colour would look quite harsh now I suspect!

Any more idea, pics, welcomed!!! I need all the ideas I can!
I've added a photo ..my hair is a little shorter at the mo, but similar. I'm the muse on the right btw... (the left side Muse is my mother Grin)

I reckon you cant go wrong with a bit of Ted!

flowery Ted but needs a jacket or wrap

Laska5772 · 04/04/2018 20:36

..my favourite is the first one.. I reckon that would look great on you

seventh · 04/04/2018 20:36

The guy in your photo looks fun 😂☺️

Lweji · 04/04/2018 20:39

I don't like playsuits, so would go for a nice trouser suit with a suitable silk blouse instead.

WillowySnicket · 04/04/2018 20:53

I don't know, but you're really beautiful, in great shape and your hair is a lovely colour.

You could pull off anything!

DarthArts · 04/04/2018 20:55

I'd go for a jumpsuit. Probably in a classic colour like Navy.

With your height it would look lovely.

Something like this - obv expensive but just an example.

Very classy and you could wear kitten heels and stay really comfortable.

It's also something you could wear time and again - change the belt and give it a different look.

Tbh it would be lovely as is for the wedding and maybe a striking silver belt for the evening.

DarthArts · 04/04/2018 20:58

Oh and I wouldn't dye your hair.

Navy looks great with silver/grey.

I'd just have the cut sharpened up and get a great blow dry on the big day.

AlphaApple · 04/04/2018 21:16

You have a great figure and lovely hair.

Beach wedding in Cornwall sounds v relaxed style wise.

IfYouDontImagineNothingHappens · 04/04/2018 21:57

Don't dye your hair, looks fab as is. You'll suit lots of the things shared here 😊

BestIsWest · 04/04/2018 22:26

You’d look elegant in anything and you hair is great.

AlphaApple · 04/04/2018 22:47

I really like @Laska5772's suggestions.

Laska5772 · 11/04/2018 20:23

I just came back because I saw this jumpsuit and thought of you OP! Smile

Hope you see it !

essietopcoat · 11/04/2018 20:48

You look like you have the figure to carry most things off - go to Phase 8, try a few things on.
Your mum looks like a good laugh in the photo.
