If you have red hair I need your wisdom! Lipstick

Evening all,

I've saved up advantage card points and quite fancy getting a nice lipstick. I've been googling for what is suggested for red heads and the Chanel shade pirate was recommended - although I'm worried it might look ridiculous on me.

If you have red hair, do you have a lipstick you buy again and again?

TIA

If you ask at the counter the lady will put it on you to try before you buy. I googled it and it is a lovely colour and will probably look fab but if you're not a regular red lipstick wearer then will you use it?
I am not a redhead but i do make up as a hobby- the last redhead I did I used Charlotte Tilbury 'Penelope Pink'.

Hellsbellscockleshells · 01/04/2018 21:13

I am a dyed red head. I always used to love bright coral red lipsticks for going out when younger now I prefer a much more neutral everyday color even for going out. Some of the Charlotte Tilbury shades are lovely though. I think you need to try a few different shades/brands you like the look of on. I also prefer a lipgloss rather than a lipstick (so it depends on personal preference).

I like Mac Ruby Woo and similar blue-reds. But I am pale with blue eyes and my hair is an orangey red rather than warm auburn or colder orange-blonde red. It depends on your skin tone and eye colour but a true blue red looks great with red hair.

Bogmoppit · 01/04/2018 22:43

A warm red actually looks better on many redheads.
For years I wore blue reds. I hated warm/orange reds.

And then I had make up consultation and they showed me the difference between the cold blue reds and the warm orange reds, on me.

They look so much better. I just looked more radiant and glowing. However all our advice is futile. You need them to look at your skin tone along with eyes and hair. Skin is usually the most important factor. Mac do some very nice reds. I think Boots may sell them online.

I have never found Boots consultations to be very good however. You could go to somewhere like Selfridges and try lots on. Then buy one from Boots. Some people swear by the new No7 colour matching but they do very, very few decent reds.

Red lipstick can be day or night. You just need the right one and do wear very little other makeup with it. Daytime I wear mascara and lipstick. Nighttime I wear foundation/tinted moisturiser, brow pencil, maybe nude shade on eyes to even out and then mascara plus tiny bit of liner, and lipstick.

MrsSchadenfreude · 01/04/2018 22:46

Get them to try it on you first, as others have said. I have reddish blonde hair, dark brown eyes and quite dark skin for a ginger, and go for mostly nude shades (Charlotte Tilbury do a good range, but so do eg Nyx and Revlon). I would try red but think my mouth is too small!

Destinysdaughter · 01/04/2018 22:58

NYX Lingerie lipstick Bedtime Flirt is a v wearable warm dark nude shade. V affordable and lasts ages!

eggsandchips · 01/04/2018 23:07

See I've always played it safe with nudes currently using rosecliff - nars. I am tempted to try something bolder... will have a look round John Lewis and test some out.

I'm a red head with green eyes and my consultation told me to stay away from red lips generally.

I use a couple of benefit purple ones. Their old lipstick range I used 'fling thing' and still buy it whenever I find a store that still has any in stock. Of their new range I use they're real 'fuchsia fever' or Punch Pop 'pink berry'

I’m a natural redhead, the lighter, brighter sort, colour of a new penny with pale skin, funny colour eyes, a deep turquoise.
I had my colours done & the makeup was as interesting as the clothes
Said if you want red, I don’t wear red much, you need a warmer red, think pillar box or tomato rather than anything with a plum/ burgundy leaning( do find they make me look like deat not even lukewarmed up)
Go for something with an underlying brightness, nothing browny which can deaden our colouring.
Some I found I really like that work well are mostly corals, from peach to pretty bright which seems better than red on me, or pinks that have no mauve tendency, warm pinks. A few I use..
Revlon Lovers Coral, a proper looking lipstick but quite balmy rather than matte.
For a wearable everyday nude Boots No7 crayon lipstick in Daydreamer
Everyday lipstick in pink, Mac Bombshell
For a real pop of summer, Bourjois lip crayon type in Peach on the Beach( think they’ve renamed it just Beach) or more pink Boots No7 Sheer Temptation in Pretty Please

buckeejit · 02/04/2018 10:43

Bourjois red number 10 is a lovely orangey red. My advise is try a couple of different shades of red & go outside & take a photo of yourself in each to review at leisure. If you can get to Mac one of the best orange Reds is lady danger & a blue red is ruby woo. This is a good starting point to see what suits you

buckeejit · 02/04/2018 10:47

First 2 are Bourjois rouge edition 10. Last one is ruby woo

Pirate is very blue.

I never used to have the confidence for red then got my colours 'done' & discovered that I suit warm tones so suit orangey/tomato reds. I'm very pale & no longer look dead when I put on the right red lipstick. Love it!

eggsandchips · 02/04/2018 15:21

Thanks everyone! You know pirate was mentioned on one of these sites recommending stuff too. I'll look up swatches of everything that's been suggested.

Ruby woo looks nice but I find MAC lipstick drying. I'm going to try pirate in the shop but if it's blue toned then it's prob not going to work. I quite fancied a Chanel as I have points to spend - I may take your suggestions and keep those in mind when looking at tones at their counter 😊👍🏻

That's where I saw pirate mentioned. Although they don't elaborate on what shade of red hair...

Did you get anything? The Arthur & Coco shades look like they might work for warm tones

eggsandchips · 02/04/2018 20:37

Not yet! I haven't been - driving to Edinburgh today. Will be looking tomorrow or the day after: will report back. 😊

gingergenius · 02/04/2018 20:42

As a redhead your skin tone will need looking at but generally, redheads find orange-toned lipstick more flattering. Blue-toned reds generally don't work but obvs everyone is different so speaking to a consultant is wise so you can try before you buy!

ballerinarosebottom · 02/04/2018 22:08

Lady danger by Mac is lovely and I’m a natural dark red head

buckeejit · 02/04/2018 23:04

Good luck & please take your time & a mirror-as I said before outside light is important. If it looks good in natural light it will look good in any other natural light ime.

I'm going into Edinburgh tomorrow. Will report back!

Chili by Mac. Natural redhead here. It's a warm red and it's beautiful.

Hellsbellscockleshells · 03/04/2018 20:23

I agree Darklane I had my colours done many years ago and she said for me to wear orange/red or bright coral coral/pinky shades.
I have a friend with her black hair dark eyes she looks fab in blue/red, blood red burgundy plum colours which all look dreadful on me.

Gannetseatfish · 03/04/2018 20:35

I’m a natural redhead (very bright) and I like benefit flirt alert. Not sure what the undertones are but I wear it without any other makeup as I can’t wear mascara (very sensitive eyes) and love it.

paradyning · 03/04/2018 21:09

Chanel la fasciniste is great
