Letting the grey hairs win

I've been going grey for years and years and I give up.
Hands up, grey hairs. You win.

So I've been dying it brown for years, I'm 43. It's now a shoulder length darkish brown with maybe 60-70percent grey roots.

I'd like to go grey gracefully. How?
I took a picture to the hairdressers today of a model with excellent grey hair and they sucked their teeth and shook their heads and suggested highlights.
I've never had such a thing and I can't picture it.
Is this my way forward?
I'd like to reach a point of low maintenance, excellent, chic grey hair in my future.
Any suggestions welcome.

I know it takes 18 months for my hair to grow from scalp to the end of my bob and I'm not going ti have a badger stripe for that long so will move to semi-permanent dyes.

Just be aware that semi-permanents like Casting don't wash out, they still need to be grown out. I had not used permanent colour for years, only semi, and when I stopped dyeing my hair it took almost two years until it was all gone.

I'm about 70% grey I reckon and was dyeing dark brown until about 6 months ago when I caught sight of my roots in the sunlight and was horrified. I'm 48.

Went to the hairdresser and we are working on a 2 year plan where she is gradually lightening / balayage-ing my hair until it meets up with the roots and then they can grow out unobtrusively. I can't stomach the idea of a short cut - it's never suited me so this way I can keep the length and eventually grow my grey out. The grey that is there is very white so I'm hoping for quite a light shade eventually.

OCSock it's not me but is a style that I'm considering. My hair is almost exactly the same colour as pic 1, I may have a little more white around the front. I'm 'only' 47 but my skin is good and I'm yet to have noticeable wrinkles and I still have good cheekbones. I did have my first grey hair at 17 so its taken 30 years to develop into this stage.

I'm lucky because I suit short hair and I can't abide a bob. On me a bob is truly ageing.

EraArils · 21/03/2018 21:47

OCSock I meant to add that I couldn't care less about the ageing and will simply wear what I want still. Just because we get to a certain age doesn't mean we have to embrace beige elasticated polyester trousers and sensible shoes, even if we are 100% grey. I love that bright colours look better on me now that I'm all grey. Black also looks so much better too. I just have to avoid anything warm toned.

Look at: Carmen Dell'orefice, Lyn Slatter and Sarah Harris for women that are stylish and grey.

My rule for choosing the clothes I want to wear is now... NO elastic! Tailored is good, fitting (but smoothed, please). Otherwise, it needs to fit, properly. No sagging, or bagging or ugly dragging. No real compromises, in truth. It needs to fit!

I have chestnutty hair but I have a full badger streak above my right eyebrow and am fully greying from both temples down to ears. I like it but the number of people who point it out is astounding! 😂

UnnecessaryFennel · 22/03/2018 13:50

On a good day my hair looks somewhat like the first photo (mine is a bit darker at the back though). Reminds me I could do with some new glasses...

I bit the bullet and grew it out. Took 2 years! My hairdresser is fantastic and loves cutting my hair. It is in excellent condition, not wiry, about 80% grey/white. I have under-streaks Grin

I'm 42. Best thing i ever did! I have pale skin with pink undertones and weirdly i now REALLY suit black clothes! Sadly i have a long-haired blonde dog that sheds like billyo!

I shall take a photo when i'm home.

OCSockOrphanage · 22/03/2018 19:40

I had a black dog!
