Are clothes sizes getting smaller????

Right - I haven't put on any weight, (although I could do with losing some anyway.)

But all my current size 12 trousers / jeans fit me fine.

But if I try on any size 12 stuff in shops it's too bloody tight. And of course the size 14 stuff just falls down.

I thought that shops were making things bigger not smaller.

GRRRRR!!!!

i find if it's a petite it is cut smaller than the regular size.Is that relevant to you?

JonesTheSteam · 08/05/2007 13:39

No - am 5"^" so don't go anywhere near petite stuff.

JonesTheSteam · 08/05/2007 13:40

That should read 5'6"

Its the size zero fad! They are forgetting us real women!!!!

themoon66 · 08/05/2007 13:41

I think sizes are getting smaller in some shops and bigger in others.

I'm a 14 in New Look, but 8 or 10 in BHS

fishie · 08/05/2007 13:41

you are in the wrong shop for your shape. ie next clothes are better for pear shapes and i find debenhams good for me who is apple (well more parsnip actually but you get the idea).

JonesTheSteam · 08/05/2007 13:42

Most of my stuff is from Next - trousers jeans - all size 12

Can't even do any of their current size 12 stuff up.

And the pair of jeans I tried on in there today, literally fell off me in a size 14.

Depends on shop, I find. Have size 10 skirt from Monsoon which falls off me, am also an English size 8 in Gap but I think I'm really a 10/12. Well, I think I'm an 11 really. Depends if you have hips as well. I'm boyish of figure.

themoon66 · 08/05/2007 13:46

Perhaps sizings have just become meaningless. It does make clothes shopping hard work though when you have to take 3 sizes of everything in the changing room.

JonesTheSteam · 08/05/2007 13:46

Tinker - on today's experience I'm a 13

just returning a pair of great plains size 12 jeans which are like drain pipes/leggings. i am size 12. boden stuff too big and i bought a size 12 cacherel dress on friday and it fits .

Tinker · 08/05/2007 13:49

Just realised I've got size 10 Monsoon trousers on and I keep having to hoist them up. Maybe I should have learnt not to buy size 10 in Monsoon Anyway, Top Tip - buy from there if you want to feel slim

JonesTheSteam · 08/05/2007 13:50

The thing is I don't really care what size I am - don't have an 'ishoo' with being a 14 or anything.

I'd just like it to be the same wherever I shop.

Oh, agree, tres frustrating.

PetronellaPinkPants · 08/05/2007 13:52

Don't forget that the things you have had for a while have stretched to fit you

newgirl · 08/05/2007 13:57

is it a case that styles are skinny fit at the mo? ie not much with elasticated waist bands around now or with pleats

babyonboard · 08/05/2007 14:09

I find it's the cheaper shops that are much smaller 'sizes'. There's definite correlation, which may have something to do with scrimping on material!?
What annoys me most is how so many clothes don't take hips into consideion, if somethig fits me over my hips it is baggy at the waist, or dresses that fit beautifully then cling badly to my hips, and the next ize up is too big on top!
Shopping is a nightmare, if only I could afford a personl tailor..

my mum bought me a vest and knickers combo from Tesco...labelled size twelve...and its massive...i reckon that it is american walmart size 12?

Tinker · 08/05/2007 14:15

lol at Walmart size 12.

Aefondkiss · 08/05/2007 14:16

monsoon, french connection and gap are all generously cut imho

I have never shopped in next for me, just because the fit doesn't work for me

h&m, I go up at least a size sometimes two sizes,

zara seems both too big and too small for me depending what I buy

Cellykawaii · 10/12/2016 13:47

i have noticed this because im a size 14 in jeans in new look. but in shops online i am between 10-12 also in new look i got a dress bodycon velvet a size 10. and it fits me perfectly so yea i do think the sizes are craazy

Honaluuhuu · 10/12/2016 13:53

Au contraire, especially M&S, a size 6 is even too big and I am definitely at least 8

intheknickersoftime · 10/12/2016 13:56

I think you're right op. i shall leave out the fact that I've put on a stone this year

MrsGsnow18 · 10/12/2016 13:57

I think different shops are def different sizes! I used to always think I would need a size 11 until I put on weight and now i'm a 13! Confused
I do find H&M trousers very small fitting and I think next can be small in trousers too.
