Lovely MNetters what does a 41year old wear to dinner the Shard?

As per the title! I have a date coming up and I haven’t a clue how to dress anymore! After years of slobbing in jeans with young DCs and never going anywhere exciting, I’ve lost track of what one wears out for a dinner date. I’m a standard size 10 and 5’4”. I don’t like fussy and would like to look a bit sexy, but definitely don’t want to be overdressed. Can you help, please?

Are you thinking of buying something new? If so, what’s your budget? I would think you should go for understated elegance. Black trouser suit with a silk vest underneath?

mimibunz · 21/02/2018 11:53

Also, you can never go wrong with a little black dress.

MsHomeSlice · 21/02/2018 11:59

we did breakfast there, it's certainly not what I would call smart. Obv dinner is slightly more prestigious, but apart from "No Shorts and Trainers" and them turning folk away that did not have an actual booking (in spite of there being plenty of space) I would not worry too much about the dress code.

margaritasbythesea · 21/02/2018 13:56

What are you preferences as to colour and style. What body shape and size are you? What is your budget? What do you definitely want (sleeves?) or not want (short skirt? trousers?)

AnaViaSalamanca · 21/02/2018 14:17

Um I have been there a few times and it's not dressy at all. Looks like any other bar really with a lot of after work crowd. I think anything except gym clothes or overly casual stuff would be OK.

These days even clubs are starting to allow jeans!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 21/02/2018 14:23

I would not wear a dress unless it's your style as I always aim to NOT be the most dressed up person in the room.
The whole TTH thing...
Don't think it's that dressy almost anywhere anymore in London-
I would wear either nice jeans or black cigarette trousers and great high shoes/boots with a lovely (sort of sexy) top.
The shoes/boots can add subtle sex appeal-I'd get a blow dry because they make me feel great and then I feel sexier...
How exciting to be getting ready for a fab date!!

How about this?

I have been eyeing this up myself but have nowhere to wear it. Night out = trip down the road to the takeaway.

Dollyxdaydreamer · 21/02/2018 16:30

Thanks! Ok so I’m satisfied that it’s not a dressy place (and the website itself says dress smart-casual) but I haven’t been out for ages and am in need of some pointers.

I love the idea of cigarette trousers or smart jeans and a (sexy) top - does anyone have a suggestion of such a top? I have 30E boobs so I can’t do strappy or go braless.

Also happy enough to wear a dress and I don’t mind showing my arms. Would like to look classy (for once) without looking like I’ve made loads of effort, or gone OTT!

I suit navy best, budget around £100, give I take.

Not sure that dress would suit me ghislaine, but thank you for the suggestion.

I had cocktails at the Shangrila hotel in the Shard just recently. I’m sure it’ll be similar, if not the same place. I wore black jeans and a blouse and didn’t feel out of place.

BuzzKillington · 21/02/2018 19:24

We went a couple of weeks ago and it was very casual indeed. I think you'd feel conspicuous if you dressed up.

Plus it's so bloody dark in there, you could get away with anything.

peachypetite · 21/02/2018 19:25

I would go for a jumpsuit!

BuzzKillington · 21/02/2018 19:27

PS I wore this top with ripped black skinny jeans and high ankle boots.

MsHomeSlice · 21/02/2018 19:39

oh lawks.... BuzzKillington that reminds me.... OP take a torch for the toilets, I was there in HIGH summer, dazzling glare, but I practically had to feel my way round the ladies!

polyhymnia · 21/02/2018 19:46

The top Buzz posted looks ideal - better than the low cut shiny ‘satin’ one.
Just avoid anything OTT.
