Any wedding dress bargains out there?

My friend is having a last minute wedding in five months. Its on a budget but she does want a proper wedding dress. £800 max but is happy to hire. She’s a size 12 and quite shapely. Today we stumbled upon a shop and she tried some on. Obviously we weren’t prepared but I’ve chopped her head off so she doesn’t go mad! What do u think to the shapes? She adored the one with sleeves I liked the vinagey v neck one on her but it had a funny brown net over the chest that looked odd

It depends where you are, there’s a great boutique in Wales that sells sample dresses or end of line stock, some donated but profits go to charity. There must be others out there like that though?

Elmosmum · 29/01/2018 22:02

I got mine in a sample sale for £325 - it's worth asking around local bridal shops as they'll need to get rid of old styles. Monsoon have some good ones too.

I'd just make agreeable noises when Weddingdress shopping with a friend- they have to love it not you!

EachandEveryone · 29/01/2018 22:04

I think she just wanted an opinion on shapes

Oh sorry thought you were looking for bargains. The middle one is lovely very flattering without the brown mesh though

EachandEveryone · 29/01/2018 22:14

I know. Her family arent around and we happened to be celebrating the engagement and she wanted to look at dresses. She really wants to do it as cheap as she can. Its going to be a lovely last minute do.

I assume you can't take the mesh off of the middle one without it being indecent?! It's just too dark for her skin tone, the concept isn't terrible and probably keeps the dress together iykwim.

The first one looks really good although I'm not sure about a veil when you've already got lots of lace with the sleeves. Not the third, doesn't do her figure justice.

calzone · 29/01/2018 22:53

I think they make her look quite busty so I would go with a more floaty material....

Ifartrainbowsandglitter · 29/01/2018 22:57

I love the vintage one and think it is very flattering. I’d just chop the mesh out!

AndromedaPerseus · 29/01/2018 23:00

I'd hire one as it'll give her more choice for her budget and most wedding dresses just kick around the back of wardrobes gathering dust
Or look at the charity shops which now specialise in second hand wedding dresses I saw a few in Bristol

goose1964 · 29/01/2018 23:14

Oxfam have a wedding shop online, not just second hand either

EachandEveryone · 29/01/2018 23:16

What do they call that style of sleeve on the vintage one?

These dresses are too tight across the hips and she'd be better with an Aline dress to skim the hips or a semi ball gown - waist then flared to cover the belly/hips

I have the same belly!!

EachandEveryone · 30/01/2018 09:30

They aren’t her size though

Middle one. Take the mesh out and replace with cream mesh or leave out if possible. Not strapless.

FauxFox · 30/01/2018 09:42

dorothy perkins have a lovely range! Who knew?

babybobobear · 30/01/2018 09:47

What about eBay? I got mine for £40 it had never been worn and then I paid £90 for alterations also got my veil for £20 brand new and looked identical to the £200 I tried on in the bridal shop!

Notreallyhappy · 30/01/2018 12:11

EachandEveryone · 30/01/2018 15:20

Honest opinion - none of them are flattering. They are the wrong shape. Strapless dresses give even the thinnest women weird squidgy bits under the armpits.

She needs an a line shape - emphasize the waist as the smallest part of her figure.

Bridal shops have a lot to answer for in terms of not being honest about whether something suits or not!

EachandEveryone · 30/01/2018 18:01

These were off the Aline rack. None of them were her size. We have an appt at Debenhams this week we will see what they come up with.

Yes - try on more dresses. I also think very ornate / detailed fabric makes you look larger. She needs a dress that fits at the waist then flares out.

Hofty · 31/01/2018 14:54

Completely agree with those above. In my very honest opinion none of those dresses do anything for her. She needs an A line, or perhaps a soft hybrid of A line and column style. I have exactly the same stomach. This photo is the shape she needs.
