The Big Sniff

Welcome to The Big Sniff!

Some of us on the Perfumista threads have decided it might be fun to have a synchronised perfume smelling. The idea is once a week, probably a Sunday, we all try the same perfume and post our opinions here. We’re very friendly so don’t worry if you’re not an expert (I’m definitely not!), the idea is to have some fun.

We’ve contacted The Perfume Society and have wangled a 20% discount on a mixed box of 9 perfume samples (plus a hand cream, some cleanser and a bar of Green and Black chocolate - what’s not to like?). The Box we’re going for this time is The Velvet Collection. All you do is visit The Perfume Society website, Add The Velvet Collection to your cart and use the coupon Mumsnet (we’re original like that!). The box is normally £19 (or £15 if you’re a VIP subscriber), but with our discount it is £15.20, (or £12 if you’re a VIP subscriber of The Perfume Society). There are some other lovely boxes on sale at the moment which come highly recommended by some of our Perfumistas and would make lovely gifts or to keep for yourself not enabling at all oh no

If you are interested then sign up here and get over to The Perfume Society and order your box. We’ll do the first Big Sniff on Sunday 28th January. Oh, and before you eat all the chocolate have a look at the sniffing notes, there’s some on the chocolate as well.

The contents of the box are as follows:
• Atkinsons Pirates Grand Reserve 1.2 ml eau de parfum(full size £120 for 100 ml)
• Floral Street Chypre Sublime 1.5 ml eau de parfum(full size £55 for 50 ml)

Ok so Connock Andiroba so far: top notes are gorgeous, spring-like bergamot and citrus, very cheering. Then almost immediately it turns to pure soap. After about half an hour the violet starts to come through, Parma-sweet at first and then mellowing into something soft and ladylike, with a little bit of muskyness.

I actually really like it, although it's about as far from a tropical rainforest as I can imagine - more like an Italian garden.

SoFancy · 11/02/2018 11:15

Private Fancy reporting for Sniffing duty!

I love the opening of Andiroba. I hadn't looked at the notes for this beforehand so had absolutely no idea what to expect...and it was a dry pleasant surprise. Bright, juicy citrus, lush greenness and a peppery kick - genuinely made me smile Grin. It had an almost lemon verbena citrusyness and a lush, 'raindrops on leaves' vibe which I wish would have stayed a little longer.

The herbal notes have quickly taken over on my skin now and I'll need a while to decide how I feel about them. Its coming off quite peppery and a bit like dried herbs or a one of those little pot pourri sachets you might put in a drawer with your undies. Not sure about it...

SoFancy · 11/02/2018 11:17

very pleasant, not dry

BigPuddleOfFloofyCatOnTheFloor · 11/02/2018 11:19

Reporting for Big Sniff duty!

I'm so glad you said it kittens as I don't get "rainforest" at all, yes to a garden though! Although I have never actually been to a rainforest, maybe they do smell like this Grin I think I got the violet almost immediately, but I might just have been influenced by I Scent You review...

I do like it and keep sniffing my wrist but on first (oh all right second, I am not patient Blush) wear it's not FB worthy - I would however definitely seek out the Connock Kukui as I admire the "quality" and think it would be an interesting house to explore. The notes in Kukui sound a lot more up my street.

If anyone reading/lurking, btw, hasn't got any of the samples PM me (or anyone adores any and wants a duplicate!) as I would be delighted to forward any on, I have benefitted from lovely MN Perfumistas and want to spread the love!

I'm really enjoying testing the new scents. It's making me think!

SoFancy · 11/02/2018 11:20

Oh yes...violet coming through now. Nice.

But I'm also getting a tobacco note (noooo...my evil adversary...we meet again!)

SoFancy · 11/02/2018 11:22

Kukui sounds good from the notes, Floofy

MrsPestilence · 11/02/2018 11:34

Citrus, green and violet not what I was expecting.

I had only read the line: Aside a rainforest, where does this take you...? This does not smell like any rainforest I have been to. Nice but not rainforest.

SoFancy · 11/02/2018 11:44

Its dried down to pretty straight up violet on me now. Random tobacco whiff has disappeared, thankfully.

I wouldn't say 'Amazonian rainforest', either. It makes me think of opening the door to an enchanted garden first thing in the morning.

I really like this. I think this is my favourite Sniff so far. I have a long list of perfumes I need (NEED!) a full bottle of, so not sure this is joining the list, but they do a travel set for £39 that includes 30mls of the EDP and some hand lotion...I could be tempted in to that at some point.

opalmum · 11/02/2018 12:01

I've got Connocks Andiroba on right now. Initially I got juicy oranges, then a sort of woody, aftershavey type scent. Now it's mellowed I'm getting not quite sweety Parma violets, more violet chocolate creams. Lots of violet and an earthy scent that reminds me of Kew Gardens after they've got the sprinklers on. Sort of damp earth and leaves. I really like this one! "Luscious" is the one word that keeps popping up for me.

CountFosco · 11/02/2018 12:58

they do a travel set for £39 that includes 30mls of the EDP and some hand lotion

Now that is definitely tempting.

It's a bright sunny day here (still clearly winter but with a hint something better is coming) and this bright fresh perfume fits the day. It's getting greener on me now and that is always a good thing as far as I'm concerned. But rainforest? Maybe not, needs stronger green notes like galbanum perhaps?

More Botanic Garden glasshouses than rainforest really.

OP posts:
BluebellGal · 11/02/2018 13:01

No rainforest but definitely Violets now, pink pepper and lots of greenery. The citrus has gone and woods are starting to appear. Not something I’d usually wear but I can appreciate it

Motoko · 11/02/2018 13:11

I made the mistake of trying the handcream that came with the box, just before spraying the Connock, so I'm not sure what the Connock smells like on it's own. (And I can't stand the smell of the handcream!)

However, on first spray, I really didn't like it. I think I'm getting some tea and tobacco, and there's something fruity, but I'm not getting violet at all, which is a shame, as I love violet.

I'll have to see how it smells later, and will try it again tomorrow without the handcream!

Buntyforgirls · 11/02/2018 13:24

I like this one! I never read notes first as I'm learning to sniff!- first I could only smell almond/marzipan but then got lots of lovely violets-one of my faves in perfume. Second spray got lemon too and its becoming much greener. For me it is a cross between Paris/eau tendre and Ealing green / slightly Mary green well lemon. Really like it - perfumista experts, can you recommend any similar to this please?

FragrantFloozy · 11/02/2018 13:29

Yes, def similarities at one stage with Ealing Green Bunty! After the citrus opening and before the woody violets bit for me.

CountFosco · 11/02/2018 13:33

Yes, I see there's similarities to Ealing Green as well.

Cannock London “Andiroba”. This is my favourite of the three so far. It opens with a freshness, not citrussy, more like a tropical garden after the rain. There is something a bit nutty-like, a kind of fragrant pistachio. Perhaps this is the iris coming in? Then there is iris and soft violet for 2-3 hours with a kind of damp earth whiff. It died down to a pleasant skin scent only, but total longevity was a reasonable 5-6 hours. I enjoyed this very much and would certainly consider a bigger decant, or even a full bottle if it was a reasonable price.

I am enjoying the Big Sniff and it has been particularly interesting to sniff in advance and write down my thoughts before “the big sniffing day”. I don’t always smell what others are smelling!

BluebellGal · 11/02/2018 14:00

I am definitely getting Iris now and it is somewhat reminiscent at this point of Avery E but with less spice/ Woods

FragrantFloozy · 11/02/2018 14:05

Sorry, how very rude of me! Its SoFancy...just name changed Grin

I do it quite frequently...apologies for any confusion.

AnotherPinkiePieStory · 11/02/2018 14:38

Loved this. Such a fizzy sherbet, tea opening for me. Gorgeous. But no rainforest for me. Italian garden too I think. Dry down is woody on me and really lovely. I tried Ealing Green yesterday and agree, similar vibe. Nice choice Perfume Society.

MrsGruber · 11/02/2018 14:48

Am in my bad taste pale peach faux fur coat (found in the dregs of Top Shop's sale) and can smell yesterday's Traversee du Bosphore. I smell and look like a huge cloud of turkish delight Grin.

Motoko · 11/02/2018 14:57

I'm starting to get the violet now. When I first sprayed it, I had such an "Urgh" reaction, that I'm surprised that I'm starting to like it now.

Judydreamsofhorses · 11/02/2018 18:58

This is NOT for me. It reminds me of when I was a little girl and would sniff the cheap perfumes in the chemist shop beside my gran’s house. I am tempted to scrub it off. The worst of the three so far. (Maybe it would be better in nicer weather?)

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 11/02/2018 19:43

Have had a couple more sprays today - just about getting the citrus but it's very bitter and lasts for only a couple of seconds right at the start. Also think I caught some tobacco with the peppery leaves - hoping the association doesn't put me of rocket.

Drydown is nice but nothing to write home about and doesn't compare to some of the other violets I've tried recently. On paper this should be total FB fodder but I think I'd put the E above this. Sort of pleased to have unexpected outcomes so far. Completely justifies sample addiction

CountFosco · 11/02/2018 20:37

E definitely is a grower isn't it. Going to wear these over the next few days before I decide if I want that travel set. 30ml is a good bottle size.
